Why not edit the proxies and relink it after the edit?

Yeah, this is what I've been doing so far, depending on the shoot, it's an overnight transcode or longer. I'd love to skip that part if possible. A quick as FCPX proxy generation is, it still took around 30 minutes to proxy a 2 1/2 minute clip.

The audio is actually the only reason I'm transcoding right now. If I was cutting a music video, I'd go straight to FCPX with the r3d's (performance permitting). Anything narrative, using 2nd system audio requires transcoding to get the RCX sync'd files into the edit.

I'm getting pretty great performance from a 2008 Mac Pro with a radeon 5870 - It's nice to see all of the cores being used during a CPU bound proxy generation...

The workflow is so good I don't know if I will use proxies - I will most likely just use the GPU timeline render when playback gets too choppy in the edit.

I'm surprised the retina macbook isn't comparable - Do you have playback set to best performance, use original footage, and do you have all of the options for "automatically generate XXXXX" turned off?

There are 2 tricks to making Red Cine Changes show up in FCP X - You just have to watch where the RMD sidecar file is.

1. Before you import your footage, you can select all the clips in red cine and create an RMD file for them. Then when FCP x imports the folder of footage it will create aliases to these RMDs so when you make changes in Red Cine, the FCP X library will notice a change on the RMD file and immediately update its raw decode. (no need to quit or even toggle windows).

2. If you Import before making RMD files, Then FCP X makes Its own RMD file and puts it in the event library. So you just have to point your Red Cine browser to the Event folder->Original Media and you can then make edits to the grades there and it will update the RMD file that FCP X is using.

Im editing Full Res 4k HD clips with no problem pretty insane. The workflow is retardedly easy. I'm almost scared to tell anyone because the there was always the old O ya it takes me hours to transcode RED to edit so its going to cost more haha. I've been working in FCPX now for the past week since swapping to Adobe after FCP7 and its so much better. I love the ease of FCPX. I tell everyone who asks that its simplier but more advanced at the same time.

I finally got a chance to check it out and I'm speechless. This is awesome. I'm working with a MBP 17" 2.5 Ghz i7, 16gb Ram, Radeon 6770M. 5K chugs a bit, but 4kHD plays back flawlessly from a Pegasus raid. Yes there's a bit of fan noise on playback but probably not full. I don't see any reason to transcode.
Let me know when the rocket is working again in a Thunderbolt case.

Hi David.

You´re right.

The orange Line is need render, but you can work without.

If you like avoid see the orange line, go to the preferences panel option, in the playback menu, you can activate the background render and the orange line dissapear in few seconds because FCPX render in background.

Also yesterday I try 3K Files in a 4K event a then reset spatial conform to type: none and get no render need but the image was samler thn the frame but just for edit was ok, hope in the future up grade of FCPX the also add 3K
