Being a HDSLR user I have to say that I actually really like FCPX. It works with the footage well and I can edit 10 times faster than I would on Final Cut Studio. I did all of my sound mixing and color grading within the program and my footage looks just as good (if not better) than it would if I edited on a conventional editing system. I honestly think it is headed in the right direction and I don't know if I can go back to the old way of editing.

But then there's that pesky issue with the lack of RED support. With Scarlet-X coming out around the corner I think its essential for Apple to implement native Redcode Raw support in Final Cut Pro X. Not only that, but I believe if they work directly with RED they can implement features found in Redcine-X into FCPX (Alchemy, FLUT, Redgamma, etc.) via a plugin. If they implemented these features I wouldn't doubt it if everyone who moved to Adobe went back to Final Cut.

So instead of bitching on an internet forum (like too many people have done) I've decided it's time to take some action. And I would like everyone to help.

Go to the Final Cut Pro Feedback page: http://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html

And put in the following message. You can obviously reword to make it sound more personal.

First off, (say something nice about FCPX. People like compliments and if you start off with complaining they won't listen).

There is one issue that needs to be addressed though, especially for pro filmmakers and editors. There needs to be native Redcode Raw support in FCPX. In your latest update you provided an SDK for camera manufacturers to create plugins for FCPX, but according to RED it is a very limiting SDK and doesn't allow enough access to the program for them to create native Redcode Raw support.

Here is a solution. Work directly with RED to implement this. What would be amazing would be to allow RED to run natively in FCPX but also working with RED to create a plugin that adds features into the Color Board allowing adjustments normally only found in Redcine-X (Alchemy, FLUT, Redgamma, etc.)

Think about it. Scarlet-X was just released and THOUSANDS of people are buying them. They want an editing system where they can edit the Raw footage and color grade the Raw images. Adobe is making a killing because they allow Redcode Raw editing. It would be so easy for FCPX to beat Adobe in this market, especially since FCPX is resolution independent up to 4K.

FCPX is all about editing your entire project under one roof. Why would you want editors to take that one extra step in color grading and transcoding in Redcine-X. RED is a very open company and would be more than willing to work with Apple directly on allowing users to edit Redcode Raw directly into FCPX and allowing editing features found in Redcine-X within FCPX.

Ideally these features should be implemented before Macworld or at least before RED gets out of backorder around March.

Thank you and I hope you work on this,
(Your Name, Company)

And then submit this at least 5 times a day until they get annoyed enough to listen.

So what say ye?!

how can your footage look better after coming out of fcpx instead of fcp7?

Someone else can answer this better than I, but could it also be because of the color management issues that have always plagued Quicktime?

Definitely that too. I've noticed that whenever I export to Quicktime, it looks completely different in Quicktime. The color rendition between FCPX, DVD, and the web are the same though. It's just Quicktime Player that's off.

the Quicktime gamma issues are gone.

Easier to make lots of simple corrections/adjustments.

The Color board kind of sucks for lots of real grading ... but it is fast for simple corrections.

You can match shots in a scene pretty fast, and if nothing else that really improves the look of what you send over to Resolve.

High precision color modeling and processing
FCP X processes images with the same precision Color had ... which I think was float per pixel, and I think it handles RGB or YUV at that precision ... although there is now a bias towards RGB processing.

Frankly that crushes the 10bit per channel YUV that FCP 7 offered.

I am not as enthusastic about FCP X as Jerrod is ... yet.

That said its shaping up nicely. In a few years all those people who said FCP X was a toy are gonna be feeling pretty stupid.

Of course ... I am happy to get a new license of Photoshop and Illustrator, plus Adobe's take on What FCP 8 should have been ... I'm also thinking about grabbing Avid MC5.5 and MC6 ... so I'll never have to turn a client away again because I have the "wrong" NLE.

Having to transcode footage is a very old skool approach to workflow in the 64bit world at present. FCPX is behind the curve now. I am very disappointed with FCPX, after buying it.

In a few years, it will be a real editing program. Nobody will feel stupid. In the mean time, we have to get our work done.

Sooo instead of complaining about it here, go to that feedback link. Randy Ubillos is not combing Reduser to find out how he can fix his product.

Yeah, after they put back everything they left out. Till then I'm holding strong with 7 and learning Premiere.

I'm sure this thread will take about four minutes to do the following.

People will say the following.

1. FCP X IS SHIT
2. I FEEL CHEATED BY APPLE
3. IT"S NOT A PROFESSIONAL APP
4. YOU CAN NOT MONITOR ANYTHING
5. ITS iMOVIE PRO
6. IT DOES NOT WORK WITH RED FILES
7. GET PREMIERE, IT"S THE BEST.
8. GET AVID. IT"S THE BEST
9. GET A REDROCKET CARD TO RENDER
10. GET SONY VEGAS, ITS THE BEST
11. GET MEDIA 100, ITS THE BEST
12. WHY ARE YOU BOTHERING WITH DSLRS, RED IS THE BEST...

Anyway. you get my drift.

I will just say this. It's all god software if you can get to the finish line with it. Like a camera. It's just shots until you turn it into a story.

Funny! :) I suspect the debate has mostly blown over at this point. Those who believe in FCPX are busy asking Apple to finish fixing it, and hoping to be able to say "I told you so" someday (who knows, maybe that will happen? I don't personally think so, but anything is possible). Meanwhile, it appears that most RedUsers have moved on...

DSLR + FCPX... those seems like a natural pairing. For motion, both seem to be aimed squarely at prosumers. Yes there will be some pros who use each (so let's not start that debate again). Anyhow, thanks for the diversion... now back to getting some real work done in CS5.5! :)

now back to getting some real work done in CS5.5! :)

Realtime is not the over riding factor for me creatively.

At least three other edit systems are better "editors" than Premier Pro. It's just not sublime.
