  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FCPX and Davinci Resolve 8

I stand corrected. It is a brand new XML format.
Rohit just pointed this out. And he also mentioned, that 8.1 does supports it.

Wait ... 8.1 supports .fcpxml ?

That is going to be kind of awesome ... I'm realy eager for FCP X to support interchange and round trip with some software.

I could play with it a lot more if I could get the work out for use with other software- most importantly to me Resolve. I can also use Resolve as a hub for getting picture back into say Premiere or FCP 6/7 if need be.

But what about R3D support in FCPX? Aren't we in a reduser forum?

Uli,

That will be up to each camera manufacturer to write when they get an SDK from Apple.

The other question is whether fcpxml will interact well with RCX Pro.

The most elegant round tripper I've used is the Clipfinder workflow but that only works with FCP 7 and color, resolve, etc.

With Storm gone that puts more pressure on RED to improve and update RCX Pro.

Third parties that have come and gone:

Monkey extract
Assimilate Redcine
Clipfinder
Storm

All these people just stoped developing.

I was referring to the enthusiasm about XML support in FCPX – it doesn't serve us that much without native R3D support…

Well, with resolve support, one could likely go offline-online with fcpx and resolve...

Would be a huge functionality advance in my book.

Disclaimer:
Haven't bothered with FCPX yet...
This made it slightly more interesteing... once Resolve 8.1 is released...

When Resolve 8.1 comes out I am going to give FCPX a shot. I LOVE XML! and actually really like the offline workflow. Offline edit and conform for online grade in Resolve, so this will be huge.... if I can stand FCPX ;)

Well, currently XML is buggy even between PPro and Resolve (and REDCine Pro too).

There have been some recent updates to Premiere that were supposed to address this. I haven't installed them yet, because I am mid project.

Right now, my workflow is to open XML in FCP and re-export XML from FCP. Resolve and FCP XML files both open properly in FCP, and both programs open XML generated by FCP - thought they won't (as of the version I have right now) open each other's XML.

That's because FCP 6/7 are the de facto standard for XML interchange. Resolve and Premiere were designed to work with FCP, not each other.

If you must go directly from Premiere to Resolve (or vice-versa), I suggest EDL. It's more primitive, but it also works more reliably.

Interestingly, my limited tests show that FCP X will import XML from both Premiere and Resolve just fine. (limited because the project in question was a single layer of video with only straight cuts, and because I was testing at the Apple store.)

I won't do extensive FCP X tests until I finish this project and move to Lion.

Clipfinder is still generating v3 XMLs, and Resolve doesn't like them.

I think any increased use of FCPX is a step backward, for any reason. I've rarely hated any soft that much.

I guess that's what makes it a ballgame. I am loving the hell out of it; especially since the update. And the new version of XML is just more extensive.

I've been with FCP since it began (Premiere prior to that). I tried FCPX for one job to test it out and then for practical interfacing with other app purposes went back to FCP7. However, I definitely miss a few of the features of FCPX already. The key wording is incredibly powerful for organization. The live ripple editing, the L-cut / J-cut editing - fantastic. And those are things that make up most of the experience of editing. Only real problems I had with it were with the color correcting method - I wasn't sinking into it. I found trying to do a finishing audio edit not as simple as with soundtrack pro (which is an app that i think was unfortunately under-recognized during it's existence). But when FCPX can smoothly integrate with other apps, I will definitely try going back.

So this sounds like a step forward towards that.
