  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FCPX and 8K Helium

Yeah takes two seconds. I would rather white balance on the Raw file anyhow.
 
Terry I am struggling to understand the white balance tool, and where it is, I am guessing the eye dropper, I dont want to bother Brody, can you point me in the right direction?

Color Finale made a 10 minute video to go over the new features that I found worth watching if you have the time. They go over where the eye dropper tool is and how to use it. Great plug in.
 
Why do you guys want to micro manage the playback resolution when in 'better performance' mode in FCPX?

As soon as the image pauses you'll see the full resolution of your timeline anyway. Why not let FCPX dynamically handle on the fly resizing when playing back so that you get real time performance?

I think the way it works is a great feature, and many times people don't even realize it's scaled down footage in 'better performance' mode, since the quality is great.
 
Ironic. Updated yesterday and, after recieving my Raven today, FCPX tells me no valid folder to import clips from..
10.3 look great anyway. Not to mention my freaking Raven. Much faster than my old, loved, Scarlet mx

Perhaps you need to update the RED Apple workflow plugin.

Because it's not dynamic (or at least it wasn't in the past)... Merely sticks to a predetermined "performance" setting that may or may not be enough for a given system at a given resolution. E.g. it may play back 4k easily, but 5k-8k not so much.

I still haven't updated... kinda swamped and still in the middle of a couple projects, but I'm hoping that 10.3 is as wicked as it sounds (though there is no mention of performance enhancement/improvement in the release notes).
 
I found the update to preform better personally, but I am just digging in

Does the Red Raw editor show up in 10.3 somewhere?

I used it all the time but after updating I can't find it.

I did download and install the latest version.

****Actually I can't get any Helium footage to play in 10.3 at all ??????

did you download the new red raw worklfow thingy, if you did modify raw settings are under the 'I' on the right window where you would choose plug ins ect and all the way at the bottom

Awaiting RED to update the Apple Workflow Installer to 12. Would love it if they added 1/4 and 1/8 in the REDCODE Preferences. Hopefully will help playback in FCPX.

I answered this; as far as I'm aware the "better performance" mode was fixed (at 1/4res) not dynamic. So it may playback 4k footage no problem, but up it to 5k, 6k, or 8k, and that 1/4 might not be enough on the same machine. So no, it's not micro managing (it makes the difference between smooth playback and not smooth playback, independent of how powerful the host machine is).

Other than that the playback quality vs. paused quality is somewhat irrelevant (it works as you'd expect.)

You did. Absolutely correct.
 
Just got my 2016 MacBook Pro (maxed specs, 1Tb SSD) and it does not play back the Weapon 8K RAW smoothly with FCPX 10.3 set to Better Quality.

When set to Better Performance, FCPX 10.3 plays the 8K RED raw footage much better, but not perfectly without dropping frames. Playing all content from external Thunderbolt Raid (330Mb/sec). When I make proxies, it flies through the content as expected.

the 330Mb/sec may be the issue. would you be willing to try putting the file on your SSD and letting us know how that works out?
