  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FCPX and 8K Helium

We need a update for .R3D support. My .RMD settings aren't crossing over into FCPX since I updated.
Re-download the RED Apple Workflow deal and restart the computer and it will work.

That last time I looked (which was awhile ago) you had to actively open your files in RCK and save an RMD for them to then show up in FCPX. Then you could go back and forth addressing the same RMD from either app. However, if you started your edit in FCPX, then went back to RCX, the changes made in FCPX didn't show up; RCX didn't recognize the RMDs. Has this changed (Seems to be some confusion about this; including my own.)

Hey Jamon! Thanks for the hook up to the Lens DR, he got me sorted out on a troublesome 50mm

Forgot to say, for people who just want to check out FCPX to edit their 8K shizzle but don't want to sign on...you can get a 30 day free trial here.

By the time 30 days is over Adobe should be caught up I would guess....

The proxy workflow is kinda cheating though; my mbp can run 4k at 8:1 (and higher) under "performance playback" (which I believe is 1/4) without transcoding... Ideally you should be able to say "Performance Playback = 1/8" and then be able to run 4k-8k in realtime without transcoding (like in premiere)... Alas, Apple is trying to handle it for me (making it auto), and they're doing a piss poor job of it.

I dont know, it works, why is it cheating I dont get it, not enough clicks?

I agree with you that I would like the same 1/4, 1/8 and so on that is offered in RCX, however you have to remember that this is an NLE for a shit ton of codecs, and .r3d is just one of them, and it is only being handled with a plug-in. I don't ever make proxies, because my so called trashcan can handle things fine. What people don't seem to get is that you can't judge the performance of FCPX on an apple machine simply by the specs of the parts like the graphics card. FCPX is optimized for Mac hardware and from what I have seen in my own experience, it works pretty darn well.

I am so jealous that it works so well for you. I was never an FCP user, but tried to become an FCPX user. I utterly, dismally failed, because FCPX breaks just about every expectation I have for an NLE. I have tried many times to wrap my mind around the magnetic timeline, but I just can't. So I'm stuck with Resolve and PPro. Both of which remind me daily that the Mac platform is a hardware dead-end.

Woe is me!

I have been dissed more than a few times on these boards, but I think FCPX is fantastic and super fast. Michael Cioni did a video about it a few versions ago that really nailed some of the reasons that it works so well.

I mean don't get me wrong; the things that FCPX does right, it does really right. And despite my gripes, I still use it.

But c'mon -- you're telling me that allowing the user to select full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16 playback resolution would break its functionality and Apple's intention for the program? If anything, the stubbornness not to include it is what's most frustrating.

Ha, I spent a good 10 minutes looking for it. On the upside, 8K FF plays smoothly when I choose View-Better Performance and not so smoothly when I select Better Quality. This will make it easier to edit without transcoding first.

I don't understand; are you making transcodes or playing back 8k r3d at "better performance"? If it's running 8k r3d at better performance then they must've tweaked it (used the latest SDK optimizations maybe?)

I only use "better performance" and anything less compressed than 4k 8:1 doesn't run well enough for me to not use transcodes (which I dislike because of the storage, and time required, and the redundancy of it.)

That's not what I am saying. RED and Apple came up with a plug in and interface to work with .r3d files, Not a rewrite of the "buttons" on the NLE. I am not saying they couldn't get in there and muck about, but if everyone did that you would have a mess. Color finale for instance, is a floating window, not a rewrite of the framework of the gui of FCPX. Believe me, there are things about FCPX that frustrate me (how about a scrolling timeline Apple????) and my machine, but overall, it works well, and again, I have not needed to transcode and I just did a project that had 11 hours of .r3d 5K stuff in the project and it worked fine...most of the time....

I am able to play 8K r3d with the better performance setting smoothly.

Running 8k 8:1 on "trashcan" with mid level (500) graphics processor under 'better performance' seems to run fine without needing transcodes. I tried some proxy and it didn't really make much difference. The ability to modify R3D settings is so easy. I just wish it had a white balance function like Redcine X.

Maybe on a laptop proxy would be needed, not sure about the new one announced today. I have quietly loved FCP X but always felt it was a little embarrassing to admit, like you were very much an amateur using it. I really tried to like other options but never did. With today's upgrade, it is even more awesome.

I too wish there were a white balance function like RCX. Because I don't transcode, I will right click on a clip and choose reveal in finder, and then double click it there to open in RCX. I make a color change and it updates in FCPX immediately. Keeping RCX open in the background if I need it works well enough, but clearly this a workaround.

doesnt the new color finale have a white balance function? I love the product but they are laking very basic FAQ and how tos. I wish Denver would spend more time on that rather than bulk emails, still couldnt run my business without him!
