  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FCP X - using it yet?

CS6 for me as well, love the drama free workflow with everything from RED to DSLR footage its a cake walk

i have just started using final cut X for Canon 1dc files 1080 50p, basically for a rough edit then i convert them to prores HQ and then put them into Avid Metafuse and convert them to 1080 25p (slo mo) for my Avid suites.

Works great and flawlessly.

Had to jump back to a CS6 project today actually... OMG... what a clunky old mess.
And yes... I HATED HATED HATED FCPX... until i finally put some serious time into learning it.
It is twice as quick to use over FCP7 and PREM Cs6.
Never ever thought i'd be saying that.

Hey... but certain tools suite certain people. If you like old school and you don't have the brain space to want to learn properly another edit system... then stick with PREM. It still works fine. Ive only moved over to FCPX because its faster. And time is money !

I use FCPX for everything now. When using FCP7, Avid or PP you can feel how much old stuff is hiding behind. FCPX feels like a future platform that will grow in a nice way.

Took about a week of banging my head against the desk to really figure out FCPX - Now it's all we use + the occasional pain free roundtrip to Davinci.

I've been using FCPX since it came out and have used it for several projects but I also use AVID, PREMIERE and for several clients I still use FCP7. Editing isn't always about speed, It's also about organizing files. My biggest problem when transitioning to FCPX from FCP7 is how it organizes your files. It's very restrictive. I try to stay neutral on my favorite editing system but if I'm doing a commercial or a short film I've been using Premiere more than anything lately and I love it. I like being able to work with the 5k R3D files natively and linking to After Effects comps is beyond cool. A lot of my friends who are newer to editing are loving FCPX though and it's definitely pretty easy to use.

I am using it, and have been off and on as the project calls for it.

It is very polarizing for me. There are things that drive me crazy, and things that are so awesome that make me want to use it more. The built-in auto-sync is usually pretty dead on, and the multicam switching works better than any other. Those two reasons along cause me to want to work in it for any multicam projects. If it's not multicam projects, then I will usually consider Premiere first.

But so much of it depends on my mood at the time…

Mark, love your work!

Those of us who use CS6 lack the brain space to want to learn properly another edit system? Really?

Spoken like an Apple acolyte... sorry to hear that. Still love your work though!

Cheers,
Tim

Just finished editing a feature on FCPX. Shot on Epic (5K, 5:1) and edited in native r3d. I kept waiting for a disaster from FCPX, but it only got better and better. I highly recommend giving it a shot (and I'm a former Premiere user because of r3d support).

My editor uses FCPX for several jobs including Epic footage. Easy as pie. Since he made the switch I might have to as well. Working with him on four projects with FCPX has been enlightening.

Anyone have experience sharing projects with FCPX?

To tell you the truth, as much as I like my Adobe subscription and using the new apps, I found that there's been plenty of tech problems (not crippling, but annoying). At first I was looking forward to getting back into Premiere, now not so much...

After using FCPX, everything just seems so old!! fcp7, premiere just seem so archaic and slow... I swithed and can't look back. FCPX handles all my chroma key, special effects, everything i could possibly need under the hood. Love IT.

Started switching slowly from 7 to X after the 10.0.3 update, in January 2012.

I needed a couple of projects to wrap my head around it, going from annoyance to acceptance to loving it (with of course, some criticism).

Now, I pretty much switched 100 percent. And I also let the company where I do freelance work, switch completely to an X workflow since January this year, and I educated my collegue editor there on it, and he now switched completely too.

I have a wish list of things I want changed, but I agree, if you have to return to other NLE's, it just feels clunky after using X.
(The thread from Mark that has been linked to earlier here is a good read)

One piece of advice? Give yourself time, learn, have some patience, see a lot of tutorials to 'get' how it does it's media management, how the timeline works, etc. ...
Accept that you will be annoyed from time to time, but don't give up, just put on with. Your brain will rewire after a while, and chances are big that you will find a lot of things to love in there...
