  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FCP X Introduces Multicam and Broadcast monitoring....

I've sat here all night trying to fall in love with it.... I pushed it aside about a month ago, it was completely peeing me off... But sadly no love found today and tonight... It has about 4 things i really really like, Like 4k real time playback, the magnetic time line, the effects tools and key framing, the colour corrector, the stabiliser, the multi format functionality that lets you play anything in the time line... But sadly it's got about 60 things i hate about it... Starting with insufficient editing tools, Slip and fit, control V cut... you have to grab the blade tool all the time, which i never use in FCP7 as well.. It is for me no quicker to use... And I have really got into it deep! And were does all your media and scratch hide???? and... an and and... It was really annoying me tonight... So much so that I almost deleted it off my machine.
The joke we have about FCPX here in LA is: it's a fantastic editing system if you're brand-new to editing. But if you've already learned one or two previous editing systems (like FCP 7 or Avid), then FCPX will drive you crazy. The user interface paradigm has made a giant shift, and some of their choices are... unusual.

But there are many, many tutorials out there designed to help former FCP people make the transition to FCPX. I'm not sure it's right for all people, but there are people using FCPX every day, making good films, and editing just as creatively as ever. Read this tutorial from the LA (uh) Creative Pro User group. Many good tips there.

Me personally, Avid presently makes more sense to me. But it's a personal choice, no different than Mac vs. PC or Red vs. another digital camera.

Isnt the Blade tool keyboard "B" good enough? Does it have to be ctl+v?

So, I change all of our post production over to Adobe Creative Suite and have found that it is much better then the 10 years I put up with FCP. Now Apple expects me to get excited about couple of lame upgrades that make FCPX almost usable - and still no r3d support? I'm sorry, that's crap. I might look at what they end up doing in another 5 years. Until then I have a business to run and Apple have been the most unreliable enterprise partner that I have had the misfortune to trust.

It's not worse than Media 100. It's not worse than Discreet *EDIT (discontinued)

Stick with it for more than a one night stand Mark. There are a fw things to wrap your head around but it is really good. I did also download a bunch of training as a quick walkthrough and that really opened my eyes to the entire approach.

Problem is we get stuck in wanting it to do everything we are used to, but like a new motorbike, there is a break in period before you can really open it up. (I could have used another analogy here)

Give yourself a bit of time a one night stand isn't enough.

David

I have mate... about 2 weeks... and one night. :)
I can edit with it, but so lacks a lot of things... Export settings are limited... actually don't get me started, I'm drafting a list of everything it cant do yet.
But Im sure it will over time... at the rate they are pushing out updates, I think they should have a great version out about the same time I retire :)))))

But seriously.. I think Ill come back to it in a year or so.. when you can move edit and work windows around onto other monitors, have full res playback without it playing in 1/4 res...
Its all just so very basic and colourful....

It is still very imovie .. (on steriods)

Yes, otherwise you have to take your hand away from the keyboard every time you want to make a cut. It's little things like this that Apple just don't understand because no one on the team is a full time editor. Rant over.

...Like I said, Command B does the exact same thing. No need for the mouse...

Never really used Ctl+V in FCP legacy and Command + B in FCPX. But now that you've mentioned it, I'm hooked ;)

Too late, IMO. I have begun PPro and works great.
