  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FCP X Introduces Multicam and Broadcast monitoring....

In other news, the LA Final Cut Pro User Group has just changed its name to the LA Creative Pro User Group. I believe the intention is, they're going to expand their coverage to Premiere and Avid, and not just on FCP.

I know many LA post houses who are nervous about the longterm commitment of Apple to the pro post community, in terms of picture editing and sound mixing. This is particularly true for the Mac Pro desktop line.

I'm hoping that at NAB in April, Apple will make an announcement reaffirming what they'll be doing in the future.
This is a movement that is happening nationally. Certainly the case here in Boston. These groups have been expanding their base, and they recognized that they could provide a more complete creative environment by covering a wide variety of tools. techniques, content sharing, guest speakers, etc.

Not to mention, Apple was absent in terms of supporting events like the Supermeet in Vegas.

Ultimately, I think this is a better direction for these groups .

I am the past chair of the Toronto FCP user group.

We tried to make the group about craft as opposed to product demos. I think it's good that these groups are expanding to bring creative editing professionals together to hopefully talk about craft instead of debating three feature sets.

FCP X is smart professional software.

Almost every piece of software, including avid now and RCX pro have a similar user interface. It's by far the fastest tool for seeing images and assembling them. To me that is the most important thing. And I'm not talking out my ass. I have used them all and, in the Malcolm glad well sense, I have easily over 20,000 hours in front of NLEs.

Good that Apple is making FCP-X better, but it's still far from usefull for me.
FCP design is just beautiful and it evolved into a powerful production tool. FCP-X seems to be design by people that have limited knowledge in the actual craft of film and tv, and just want to shine as Apple-wizzards.

I'm happy to see this update, as well as this being front page news at apple's website. It shows some commitment from their part. Even better will be if they take this momentum and announce a new Macpro. This would ease a lot of people's minds. I bought final cut x and am a FCS 3 user. Have been thinking about going Premier but FCS3 still works for me right now. If I had to choose to commit between FCP x and premiere right now I would still go Premiere. But seeing that I do not have my Epic yet, I can still work with a fine Prores workflow in 7. The decision of going premiere or FCP X depends on these factors:

1- r3d code support as well as redrocket support.
2- New Macpro with thunderbolt technology (to see if I stay in the platform)
3- black magic card output for external monitoring.
4- audio tracks and OMF export for audio mastering software like protools. Not sure about this one is this resolved yet?

Have to say the day looks brighter for FCP after this release. Hope this isn't it, though!

Tried it out - small learning curve - after that I was flying away a lot faster than I would have done in fcp 7. No problem with sending xml over to nuke directly, thanks to free scripts out there.

David Battistella is right, this is a clever UI and the way it works is truly great (once you get used to it). If it's for everyone. Is another matter, but when it gets integrated more out there and more and more companies follow. It will be more than a strong contender. It's simply really clever.

I did 10 layers with effects "nested" and then back and forth between that and "unnested" to adjust etc. Previewed effects on the fly. Made time "ramps" to my preference on each and every shot also "nested" (moco layers). What would have taken a few hours in fcp 7 - took a little less than an hour to do in fcp x..... On my laptop.... :)

Can't believe some people are excited about FCPX _almost_ catching up to the last version's feature set (which was released in 2009). $10 to import FCP7 projects, and from a third party instead of Apple? Still no R3D support? Still no roadmap for remaining missing features? Still no commitment to refresh Mac Pros? Couldn't be clearer that Apple is about the iPhone market first and foremost, and other markets as an afterthought. Not the kind of company I want to buy my editing software from.

I've sat here all night trying to fall in love with it.... I pushed it aside about a month ago, it was completely peeing me off... But sadly no love found today and tonight...
It has about 4 things i really really like, Like 4k real time playback, the magnetic time line, the effects tools and key framing, the colour corrector, the stabiliser, the multi format functionality that lets you play anything in the time line... But sadly it's got about 60 things i hate about it... Starting with insufficient editing tools, Slip and fit, control V cut... you have to grab the blade tool all the time, which i never use in FCP7 as well.. It is for me no quicker to use... And I have really got into it deep!
And were does all your media and scratch hide???? and... an and and... It was really annoying me tonight... So much so that I almost deleted it off my machine.

I'm annoyed, because I want to love it, I want to cuddle up with it. But I think the biggest problem with it, REAL editors have'nt designed it... Only toy makers have... thats were they fucked up.
I think they should put a single button in it that gives you a simple timeline interface like FCP7... same tools as well. Just keep simple things the same for a while... and let people venture into the new time line slowly... Thats the key to drag in the people that are loyal to FCP... but in its current state, I doubt they will get many PROs jumping on board. Its such a long long way off. I'd love to jump onto the APPLE payrole and pull it into shape... I'd charge 2 cents a day, thats how much I'd like to see this thing come back to its former glory yet keep the good new ideas as well..

It is at present the worst editing tool out there. Sorry Apply. ( i'm trying, I'm really trying )

RCX will be the "next" FCP.

Has anyone tried to edit in it recently?
Its more fun than FCPX.

Thats not a silly idea!!!
If RCX could rip off a FCP time sequence time line, edit tools, effects, key framing, audio tools... etc... It would be a seriously good thing.

Are your old projects not worth $10? I don't know if you realise, but you can buy Final Cut Pro X and the 7toX tool for less than the FCS2 to FCS3 update...

Still no commitment to refresh Mac Pros?

Of course Apple is going to upgrade the Mac Pros... Since there is no Xserve any more, they need the Mac Pro for XSan metadata servers and such. They can't discontinue it (but they could replace it with something that fulfils both a server and a workstation better than the Pro currently does).

Can't believe some people are excited about FCPX _almost_ catching up to the last version's feature set (which was released in 2009).

This is misleading. I don't recall FCP 7 having a 64-bit GPU-accellerated rendering engine, background rendering, or many other things FCP X has.

Still no roadmap for remaining missing features? Still no commitment to refresh Mac Pros? Couldn't be clearer that Apple is about the iPhone market first and foremost, and other markets as an afterthought. Not the kind of company I want to buy my editing software from.

When does Apple significantly pre-announce routine hardware updates or new planned software features? They almost never do the former, and they only routinely do the latter for OS X and iOS, where developers need access ahead of time. What you're explaining as Apple treating pro users as an "afterthought" is just Apple behaving like Apple. No further explanation is required.

It's not worse than Media 100. It's not worse than Discreet *EDIT (discontinued)

Stick with it for more than a one night stand Mark. There are a fw things to wrap your head around but it is really good. I did also download a bunch of training as a quick walkthrough and that really opened my eyes to the entire approach.

Problem is we get stuck in wanting it to do everything we are used to, but like a new motorbike, there is a break in period before you can really open it up. (I could have used another analogy here)

Give yourself a bit of time a one night stand isn't enough.

You're making my point for me: I'll stick with Adobe, who are here on Reduser responding to user concerns and requests ahead of their next release. You can have the company that doesn't communicate jack, takes a year to catch up to its last version's features, and still doesn't support R3D, while at the same time is lining up thousands of Chinese workers to manufacture their next phone. I like companies who prioritize my needs first!

Agreed! Make it happen, Red Team! The ultimate NLE for red!

I think how it' s handling clips , it's doing an amazing job from what I've seen. i've always wanted some kind of overal overview from my timeline , if zoomed in and you do an edit, you see if something happens anywhere else on the timeline.
Clips being linked can cause trouble , I think when things are ganged like they are in FCP-x it's a pretty clever thing not having to cut, acces, move, remove, cut again, move and remove once again.
I've been chaning for broadcast issues to Edius 4 years ago , which is 100% reliable all time, but the lack of R3d support let's me dream as well of another nle.

I simply cannot be bothered with Apple and FCP X - their attitude to the community that has supported them the most over the years just stinks. They are now addressing some of the obvious missing features bit I think the damage is already done so let's not get too excited here.

Most pro users of FCP have already made their choice and it looks like Avid will be the winners in the broadcast sector with MC6 and with Adobe a close second although this may change with CS6 when it ships later this year.

I also think that unless Apple come up with a really impressive revision to the Mac Pro, users will switch back to PC. I know are certainly looking at this but we're waiting to see how apple respond to Intel's Ivy Bridge launch in April/May.

It's now Command B. Trust me I was getting very frustrated with it before I figured that out. Now I have had no issues with it since.

This is brand new software and before you start hating it you have to learn it. I downloaded Larry Jordan's training videos just so I could learn FCPX quick, and it has definitely helped in the long run.

And about OMF, Automatic Duck has free software out for transferring FCPX projects to Pro Tools.
