  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FCP does not support 16x9 red files????

Is there a special section at the apple website for RED/FCP downloads as they become available? Or have there been any majors since the release of FCP Studio 2? I can't find any. I guess these would be coveted here and would be available through RED tech support?
I'm just gearing up and want to be on top of things....

I just got my Red last week. I'm thinking that it would be best for me to tread water for a week or so until #16 is out than spend time learning #15 only to have to unlearn then relearn, etc. Thoughts? Is #16 that much different in operations, buttons, etc. (non-quality aspects)?

Absolutely not. Dive in.

I think you owe this board and the RED team an apology.

no he does not. as a customer who bought an product which is advertised as delivering a 4k 16x9 resolution, which is editable in Apple FCP and found that this is not so after purchasing the camera, he has all the right to complain if not sue the company for damages. we live in a capitalist world. ( if you know what that means and what's the characteristics of capitalism are)

have you been on Mars in a cave with your fingers in your ears? I don't even have a Red Camera yet, but I've followed everything posted on Red.com and other sites and understand several possible workflows using the Red One. It's been well documented. Anyway, watch Red's show called Mythbusters, it mentions the 4K Quicktime file along with other things.

A customer does not have to follow anything on a forum or a website or watch any video necessary to operate a camera. a manual should be included with the camera which address the limitation of the purchased camera and its possible workflow.

If you are unhappy... I'd be happy to take the camera back. We have plenty of people waiting impatiently.

What number are you?

Jim

is this your return policy? if he returned this camera will you pay him the full amount of the purchased camera or will 80% or 70% of the camera price. what if the camera is slightly damaged? what about the money which incurred during the production which shot on RED and shots could not be used or edited anymore?

i know what you fanboys are doing to say. 'this is a beta camera and the worldflow is getting better day by day" and blah blah blah. If so why SELL this camera NOW? Because You Can?

Disclaimer: Jim is doing a great job developing a digital cinema camera but the efforts are not enough to satisfy the need of the customer or filmmaker.

Really? So all of us who are using the camera daily are not satisfied? Red has never hidden the fact that this camera will constantly be under development. Some people may not like this type of process. They want a finished product, even if it means the finished product was not as good as it could be if there was ongoing development.

I can understand some frustration, as there have been some speedbumps along the way. But again, Jim and the team have been very honest about them and Jim has honored the policy of returning 110% of your initial investment for those who had jumped in early if they decided the camera was not for them.

If build 16 delivers the way it seems like it will, then the wait will be well worth it for all of us who got in early because we've been able to learn the camera, learn the workflow, and offer suggestions on how to improve things so those who are ordering now benefit.

I do understand where you are coming from, but I just don't agree about the efforts of Red or that we are not being satisfied. And enough with the fanboys thing already. I think some of us are quite openminded, yet can still be a fan of this camera.

Unbelievable!
Seriously unbelievable...

Ive been shooting that much stuff on red without a hitch, Clients are now demanding I use it, now that they have seen results, 16:9 issue is not even and issue, you just pop out your 2:1 project to 16:9 when you lay out to tape. Takes no time at all.
Some of you monkeys are absolute amateurs with these ridiculous comments.

Jim is right, I'll pay the guy his full amount right this second for his RED, just to get his crap off this blog.
I need more bodies now, and i don't care if it has a scratch on it either

sheeeesh!

Thats good (the fanbot thing) , so what do you mean by 'those who jumped in EARLY'? if my camera arrives today and i decide the workflow or the camera is not for me in 6 months, will it be the same 110% ? i know you are not supposed to exceed x number of hours. but what if i did, and i still no happy with the camera?

Go buy an XL2 or something...
Leave the RED for people who want it.

If your not happy with your camera sell it to me... do you have it now?
If you don't have a RED camera now, then don't buy it!, you'll hate it!
But if you have one coming in the next week or so, I'll buy it off you.
I'll save you all the pain.

i'm taking about a customers right to complain, and companies return policy. what is amateur in that?

I'm not looking for potential buyer for my red one . I want to exercise my rights as a consumer and want a black and white return policy. not promises and advice that i should buy a XL2 or other camera.

One might be here to offer buy the camera,
another day one might not be there,
in that case a policy will guild you along the way,
red has responsibility to path the way,
to join,
and to exit,
in consumers way.

C.J.Harvaraj, play the devil's advocate all you want, but as far as I know, I can get a full and complete refund if I think I made a wrong decision in purchasing this camera that I don't have yet. ;>) I'm on a waiting list and continue to be until my product is delivered. I can cancel with a FULL refund up until I take posession. If I take posession and am still not happy, yes, hours come into play, restocking and "postage" fees become factors, but it IS IN BLACK AND WHITE, FOOL! Check the site, you'll also find an on-line manual, an accepted practice in the 21st century (I'm listening to the RHCP's as I write!). My 2c's.

BTW, the owner of the company says he'll buy your camera back if you're not satisfied. Find that somewhere else in corporate America!

...Oh yea, I'm just a pink bandwagoner; I should be exercising my right to complain, like you, just for the hell of it! Just to back up a bit of frustration, which I'm sure I'll feel when I start editing my own gems. Just try learning ANY language, nevertheless CREATING ONE from scratch! (Hey, I could get poetic here, and relevant, too! Naw - to the BAR!!!

Nothing works. I can't even drag an H proxy into fcp and get it to play, I get a
"general error" RedCine crashes every time I try to launch it. The tech guy at
red said no 16x9 red files are supported by FCP. Am I supposed to be happy about that? The Mythbusters are saying 4k 16x9 just drops right into FCP...the red tech said he is "not familiar with the mythbusters video"......IT"S RIGHT ON
YOUR RED.COM WEBSIGHT!!!!

Full 16x9 support is coming in build 16. The best option (as many of us are well aware) is to shoot 2:1 and then use your guides in camera to frame for 16x9 and in post process as such. It's not as painful as it sounds. What your missing out on by not having 16x9 is taking advantage of the entire 16x9 sensor. But, what format are you going to? If HD, then this method should give you plenty of resolution until full 16x9 support is there.

Red Techs need to know these kinds of things when going out on jobs. It creates a world of problems and lots of frustration if the powers that be are not told what to expect. Hence, what we are seeing here with eastwaviking's shoot.

Not true.

As has been discussed here at great length - the solution is to render the 4K 16:9 .R3D files into standalone QuickTime files using REDCINE, available as a free download from the RED support website.

There will be other paths after Build 16 ships because the existing restrictions on the camera QuickTime reference files and REDALERT! will go away.

Alright, I am finally getting somewhere, we shot 4k 2:1 and the H proxy dropped in to FCP and played. It looks like you still need to go through Redcine
to make a file that you can edit with dissolves and other effects....correct? Because when I put a dissolve in the H proxy file it rendered it and it showed up as a green screen.

Thanks

You can also take proxies generated from 4K 2:1 footage (not 16:9) and drop them into compressor and convert them to Prores, which is a very stable off line codec.

Then take the XML editlist from FCP and convert it (at this time I recommend Crimson) to a REDCINE XML list and then convert the actual REDCode footage to codec of your choice. GREAT SUCCESS!!!!

Eastwaviking,

What version of FCP are you on?

What version of Quicktime?

What version of OS X?

I hate to point out the elephant in the room here people?

FCP is an Apple product, NOT Red.

Duh!

"If you only have a hammer, everything looks like a nail." ----somebody-------

FCP is not the right tool for this job end to end right now.

NOT RED'S FAULT.

Buy Scratch, it's the right tool right now.

Tek

Tekcin, two years ago at NAB Red promised they and Apple were THE solution.
This year at NAB Red was using an out of the box mac pro in their booth.

FCP has to be the right tool at some point...right?

IMHO - I've been using Final Cut since version 2. For editing, it is the right tool at all times.
If I needed to 16x9, I would use RC to output UC10bitters and then chop them up accordingly - in FCS.
