So, we got our red camera, shot some 4k and 2k footage, brought it back
to the studio, tried to drag the H proxy into fcp and got "general error".
Crashes and green footage. I have the redcode codec and an intell quad mac. Called Red and the support dude said, "the file
should drop right in as long as it's not 16x9"......What? I asked. "Yeah, fcp doesn't support 16x9 red files at this point"

Is this true??? If so, why have a f@#king Red camera?

Help!!!!!

You have a f@#king Red camera to shoot 4K footage at 35mm DOF with cine lenses, at a data rate comparable to uncompressed SD.

Currently the only program that supports 4K 16x9 is RedCine. Others will fall into place. Meanwhile, you can shoot and edit 4K 2:1 smoothly, which is still more than you will get in any camera, even those that cost ten times what RED does.

And of course, 4K 16x9 support is coming in the future.

Welcome, I think ?

a) Please calm down and mind the language ...

b) QT support for 4K 16:9 has been discussed at great length on this board. its coming with QT upgrade for Build 16, which is in Alpha test.

In the meantime, you can either shoot 3K or 2K 16:9, or export PROres encoded files from 4K 16:9 .R3D files using REDCINE.

have you been on Mars in a cave with your fingers in your ears? I don't even have a Red Camera yet, but I've followed everything posted on Red.com and other sites and understand several possible workflows using the Red One. It's been well documented. Anyway, watch Red's show called Mythbusters, it mentions the 4K Quicktime file along with other things.

so if i read this correctly, fcp will work with 2k 16:9 or 3k 16:9

but not 4k 16:9, not yet

right?

4K 2:1 is the best option until Build 16 is released in Beta in about a week.

If you are unhappy... I'd be happy to take the camera back. We have plenty of people waiting impatiently.

What number are you?

The right tool for the right job man.

FCP is great for 4k 2:1 cropped to 16:9 is no problems.

Stop eating soup with a fork, and then complain that the fork is bad.

Also please don't try to BBQ with your bare fingers.

Wrong tools.

I just got my Red last week. I'm thinking that it would be best for me to tread water for a week or so until #16 is out than spend time learning #15 only to have to unlearn then relearn, etc. Thoughts? Is #16 that much different in operations, buttons, etc. (non-quality aspects)?

This is not new. Render your files through RedAlert to HD PreRes 422 files. You will have fab footage. Don't use the f-word here please.
