Ok this is way off topic but also kinda not really. A lot of us like to have a cup of coffee to get through those all-nighter RED shoots and post work. I'm into these pod machine coffee makers like Nespresso and Keurig: http://www.keurig.com/

Anyone got a particular favorite?

I'm a total coffee snob...

I've had many machines over the years... Estra's, LaPavoni's, but my current one that I just love is a Jura C9. The Jura is fully automated... where as the lapavoni's were hand lever pump designs that go back to the 40's...

I tend to use Illy medium roast beans... love the taste.

con Illy

I have the LaPavoni right now as well. Very manual, but great coffee.
I'm on the Illy coffee too.

What would be the simplest/smallest/best machine I could use to make kick-ass cafe lattes? I don't really need it to other things -- only latte.

Right now I am using a french press, and that baby makes some seriously nice coffee.

Try one like mine in post 5, its about as simple as you can get. If you go to Italy or any mediterranean country you will find them in every household.

I adore my French press, and for espresso drinks, I got the most affordable piston driven Krups machine I could find. The piston is key. At the time it was $100. I don't think they have one quite so affordable any more.

I know those are a staple, but I've always found the coffee they produce to be bitter, and over extracted. Those pots brew with boiling water. The best coffee IMHO is made with water just off of the boil.

Actually they don't really brew or percolate as such this is like espresso. And its not boiling water – its past boiled – its steam!

For those that don't know how they work the water sits in the bottom near the flame and the coffee sits in the middle. The water boils till its steam and gets forced up thru the compressed coffee and collects in the top. Its the closest thing to espresso from an espresso machine that I've found.

You have to watch them though, as soon as the water at the bottom runs out you must turn off the flame or the coffee at the top starts to boil and gets bitter. You'll notice I've forgotten a bunch of times as my handle is a bit melted!

Its a ritual thing. If you want it all auto then don't go with one of these.

Think manual lens vs AF if ya get my drift.

edit:
@Tom - I read that u r on the road soon and these are great for traveling as there is no electricity, just need gas cooker

I have to go with the Cuisinart grind and brew.

http://www.cuisinart.com/products/coffee_bar/dgb-550bk.html

I only use fresh beans for my coffee, never pre-ground. This machine allows me to grind and brew at the same time without the use of a separate grinder.

Totally programmable, the grinder is my alarm clock! Used it for the past two years ..love it!
