  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Faulty Red Scarlet in deepest, darkest Africa.

the screen is very finicky to use. you basically have to use just the tip of your nails to make it work. its so bad when i got mine i thought it might be broken as well! try using just your finger nails or getting a little pen they use on other devices

the glitch when punching in is a normal thing, it looks bad but its not an issue, will be fixed someday in a firmware update. it just does it for a second and jumps back to normal.

I don't have any suggestions for the touchscreen problem, but momentary glitching when switching into or out of magnify is normal.

For the EVF: have you tried different scaling options in the evf menu settings?
Also, Have you tried different HDMI setting in the RED Settings menu?

Sorry to hear of your problems.

The screen glitch in magnify toggle is normal - you get used to it!

Are there any Red owner/operators/rental houses in South Africa you could ask for help - diagnosing faults really needs being able to swap out individual components to isolate the problem. Ideally you should have bought at least two LCD cables anyway as they are the weakest link in the chain, and it's a matter of when not if they will eventually fail from normal use. If you have two, then try a different cable.

Make sure there aren't any bent/damaged pins/sockets too.

Remember to avoid damage to camera or modules, turn the camera fully off while detaching/attaching any DSMC modules - including the lens mount, side handle, side SSD module and any rear modules.

The LCD and EVF are OK to hotplug though - you could try replugging the LCD cable while the camera is on, to see if that has any effect on your touchscreen responding to touch.
As you say it responds OK after a hard reset, it implies it's not a case of your particular hands/skin type not activating the touchscreen (some people with very dry or calloused skin can have trouble).

Thanks for the response everyone :)

@Brian, I did read about that when I was researching the camera but I've used and Epic with Touch LCD before. This screen is NOT working.

Good to know the magnify toggle glitch isn't unique to my scarlet!

Still can't get the EVF working properly, it has the newest firmware and we've tried all the presets including Epic/scarlet presets.
I've also tried a bunch of the different output settings on the scarlet itself.
sigh.

Before you ship anything.

Go to a rental house and ask for some help.

First test with another cable.
Then test with their touchscreen.
Then test your touch screen on their camera.

Then you will know if it's the monitor cable, camera or touchscreen that is faulty.

My guess is the cable.

Regarding your EVF i would guess it's the SDI or HDMI output settning on the camera that might need to be changed so that it fits your evf's standard.

Sorry but your scarlet should work like a charm. I didn't have any issues like that with mine straight out of the box. You should log a red ticket and I know it's expensive to ship back but the longer you wait the worst it will get. You have made a great investment in RED so don't let the issues spoil it for you. If you would have gotten that sony F5 the parts plus the camera would have cost you way more than sending your Scarlet in for repairs ...well that's how I feel anyway. The scarlet is 4K without all of the RED tape to make it work but I feel your pain when you buy something and it has a lot of issues. I would ship the Scarlet and the monitor to RED so they can test them together in case one of them is Bad.

+1 for Bjorn and Tony

Start by trying to locate another owner op or rental house...

If that proves impossible order a cord. Assume its the cord to the touch screen, they break constantly...

Then if neither fixes it, contact Red for a support ticket... If shipping is that expensive, try to do all your other options first... My guess is the cord... Could be the camera or the screen though...

PS can you order or rent a side handle?
