Hi!

Working with a Dragon now.

Quick question about the fan modes. I agree that "Adaptive" or "Adaptive Quite Record" seem to provide the best results.

However, what are people using in terms of the target temperature? I see that the camp is divided in two, pretty much. Some use 65, some use 70.

I personally find the fans a bit louder at 65, so I prefer 70 as far as the fan noise is concerned. On the other hand, is it safe to run the camera at 70 all the time, for extended periods of time? (or at all times).

Does RED say it's ok (safe) to set the target temperature at 70 and leave it there? As far as the overall life of the camera is concerned.

Thanks!

It will be extremely slightly louder at 65 versus 70. And it is safe to run at 70. The camera and fans with the Adaptive algorithms regulate themselves.

Red ships new Dragons and after firmware updates it defaults to 65. I've gotten rather comfy with that and it's pretty much what I'm running mostly these days.

Though I started out targeting 70.

Yeah, I think it has more to do with how comfortable you are with the given noise level at the various temp settings. I tend to run my Scarlet at 55c-60c because it honestly doesn't sound much louder than 65-70c to me. Also, the problem with 70 is that, if you are shooting in a warm room/area/time of day and it needs adjusting, it only leaves ~5c before the fans kick in, whereas 10c (65 to 75) is quite a ways to travel with adaptive enabled.

Also, I leave it straight adaptive (I find adaptive-quiet-record gets the camera uncomfortably hot physically).

Does anyone know what the dB rating is when the camera is set to 65 or 70?

From where and with what? I can honestly take a measurement if necessary.

RED would not offer the 70 degrees option in the adaptive mode if it was in any way unsafe for the camera.
Due to the need to black-shade when changing that temperature - I just keep it there.
But since we can now store few black-shades in the memory - I might consider having one for each temperature...

That would depend on how hot the ambient is. Adaptive runs the fan to try to get to the target temp. If you are in the arctic, it will be very low noise ;)

My question: I run adaptive, and the fan slowly ramps up and down in a good way while the camera is idle . The setting I use cuts the fan to a maximum of XX% while in a take, to allow less noise getting into your audio. So far so good.
But when I stop recording, it takes forever to ramp up the fan to take away the heat of that last take. Even if the camera is much hotter than I have set as a target.
I want the fan to immediately respond after a take to try to get cooled down. Why the slow ramp up that takes more than a minute to start cooling ?
If the temp is far above ( > 10 C ) my set temp, it should go 100% speed to 'catch up' with it's cooling.

Incidentally, I run at 55 or 60 degrees. Sensors in general make less image noise when cooler.

I agree 100% with Les, maybe with a slight delay like 5 secs.

BTW I think Dragon like to sit at high temperatures, but I'd really be curious to know the "optimal" MX temperature...anyone?

I'd say 65 since it's the default?? Or not?

Film camera have Noise Ratings as seen in a chart from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_movie_cameras ,
so I was hoping to find out what the Dragons Noise rating was when the camera is in a say 70 degree F room.

I do not know if the wiki chart is accurate, and I do not know how the "Industry Standard" measurements were taken.

Anything for you Martin :)

Wow fantastic info! Thanks for going through all that trouble for us!
