  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Extremely sharp images from FCP/Color

Color takes it's demosaic, either "half-standard" or "half-high" from the proxy settings. FCP takes it from the control panel.

Graeme

General questions:

-r3d native import in fcp is the same "quality" as the files color uses? So if I'm happy with fcp's color correcting posibilities, I'm grading "original" r3ds?

-Fcp can do up to 4000 pix wide - why can't the r3d native import just crop those 96 pix so we get "almost" 4k?

Thanks

Color can even read 4096 :)

You just have to scale it (try with prores or DPX)

The unfortunate thing is that the r3d's are scaled for us in a way we do not controll

(yes, I know. Give him the little finger etc...)

LUT's are a bigger issue currently...

If so...why can't we work with 3K footage in a 2K timeline in FCP ?

Maybe i'm doing something wrong...

It doesn't scale properly in Color...and if i upscale in geometry room, it's not nearly as sharp as "real" 3K original footage.

thanks

Thanks!

But it doesn't say in which format (visually losless if possible...) they convert from 3K to 2K or 4K...

Any suggestion for a true visually lossless format for scaling ?

...and will the chosen scaling format will behave the same for matching color correction ? (LUTs)

Antoine

DPX is what I've used

But I have serious issues when I remove the LUT for rendering. With the LUT intact, it works well. Have to work a bit to see if there's a solution to it, but now it's hollidays and kids...

Note that the control panel is only installed from the "standalone" REDCODE
codec installer...it does not install with the FCP plugin/codec/framework installer.

Mr. Nattress, if I remember correctly, for maximum quality we have to export the master to the project's native resolution [4K, 3K 2K, regardless of the "resolved" percentages] and then do the scaling for our destination [SD, 720p, 1080p or whatever].

Is this right?

For absolute maximum quality, you are correct, however, say "half-high" 4k to 2k is very, very close as good as maximum quality with a large speed advantage.

Thanks.

My basic understanding of scaling is that it is done via duifferent algorithms [Lanczos, Bilinear, etc.] and each one has its pros and cons.

I see different apps that offer using such algorithms, but nevertheless, some apps probably perform better than others.

For example, can After Effects perform well enough with these tasks?

If you don't have access to the scaling algorithms, I'd hazard that half-high would be optimum. If you can choose the algorithm, you may be able to get it looking better. Who knows - it's very image dependent.

Hi Graeme

If your final image is 1080p and you have a 4k (not quad HD) is this still the case. My test said no but maybe I am mistaken..

thanks again

This is probably a stupid question, but I do not see any system prefs in Color, let alone a Half-high or half-standard pop up menu. Where is this?
