Hello All,

I am trying to find out what the expected "life" of the camera may be. Do any of you know or have had a REDone long enough to know any kind of average?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Andy

Are you talking about market value or are you talking about the physical life of the camera? If it's the latter, I've had my R1 since Feb '08 and it is still (knock on wood) running just fine.

I have had my R1 M since march 2008 and expect it to take wonderfull images in 10 years....

until you decide not to use it any more

until 4k is obsolete

Thank you!
I figured I'd get these kinds of answers. The higher ups in my company are trying to grade depreciation and whatever else they're trying to accomplish with an answer that I already gave them

I think this is a little bit of a frightening question, if you look at the increasingly rapid evolution of camera technology (especially if you inlcude the Arriflex mechinism, which predates WWII and only recently became obsolete). On the other hand, they are getting cheaper as they evolve (or at least some of them are).

I saw one take a dive from not being locked on a tripod...darn thing fired up and worked for the next 3 days without a hitch...lens got busted though

Our RED One feel clean off my steadycam mount and landed back first on a bare concrete floor. I was sure it was destroyed. But guess what? It didn't miss a beat. . . and, better still. . . it didn't even damage it cosmetically!

God was particularly gracious that day.

Agreed. I don't know of any non-working Red Ones that didn't meet its fate under water, on fire or off a rooftop! Mine never missed a beat, and never needed service of any kind.

Only time it ever went back to Red was for free upgrades, where Red even paid the shipping!

Then they gave me 100% of it's value towards an Epic, which they discounted almost 50%.

I cannot get over this company, never been treated this well and never expect to again!

Thank you!

They should be allowed to depreciate it at 20% per year at a minimum.

This is fantastic! I am glad it is ok, but great story!

Think of it this way: there are people buying NEW F3s NOW, Canon just released a 1080p, 8bit camera and is selling it for $17 000 - so how long do you figure it will take for a 4K RAW cam to become obsolete/no longer useful when competitors have not even equalled the tech yet with what they're shipping or have announced for the near future?

The only truly dead Reds I've seen have been rented almost every day to very low-end clients without supervision for more than four years (surely dropped, dipped in water, who knows what many times). I have never heard of an owner operated Red that just stopped working.

Even our Red drives have proven 100% reliable - we've had a single dead firewire port on one of them, but USB still works fine on that too, as does the drive. Our Red ("Elmo") and drives see a LOT of use (granted, responsible, caring use - we love our Elmo! - but not always ideal conditions).

Thank you!

3 years straight line would make sense, ho quickly does your company write of Laptops?
