  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Expectations...

Exactly. I was more than ecstatic at the specs the Scarlet originally had from the get go. Most important was the price which meant it was within reach. As features were added, so grew the price, yet still "within reach"

So in the sense that Scarlett won't disappoint, I have no doubts that whatever is announced on Nov 3rd will be super awesome, and will represent a great achievement in terms of VALUE. However, the reality is that some, like myself, may have to accept the fact that what was once "within reach" is now still a distant dream, at least in terms of affordability.
This is exactly the point I was trying to make. I think there are many people in your situation as it pertains to Scarlet specifically. The big question is, will Scarlet blow us away in price, features, or both? Again, I agree that for the price - whatever it is - the value will be great. And I have a feeling the spec has only improved since we've last heard anything concrete. The question is, will it still be a viable option for those with limited budget (especially when those with larger budgets will likely opt for Epic). We will know soon!

Terry, when Jim laid out the roadmap, he named the Epic-M and Epic-X specifically but left out mention of the Epic-S. Some people got worried and pressed him for clarification.

His reply was an indication that those people were not being neglected. He could've easily given an update on the Epic-S status. Instead, he was cryptic but reassuring. That's why I'm fairly confident an S35 (or similar) sized sensor is forthcoming. If not, that means Jim intentionally misled some people. I don't think that's the case.

I believe it will be in the Scarlet family, however that works out, along with other offerings. I might be wrong.

In this case, it's what Jim did and didn't say on which I base this assertion. My interpretation could be wrong, but at least it's an interpretation of the facts more than it's speculation.

Come on, that you conclude "Jim has intentionally misled some people" if your S35 Scarlet prediction is wrong is way beyond me. Jim's running a camera, lens, accessories and software company (and a fully stocked studio right smack in the middle of Hollywood). Do you really think he or anyone else at Red has the time to carefully craft every single message so that all the tea leaves align to create a clear image if held to the light a certain way?

If Scarlet's physical specs are exactly as been last described, no one has been misled--intentionally or otherwise. And all the quotes about things changing over the last few weeks could just as easily be related to the camera's software, production numbers, price, etc... or about things unlrelated to Scarlet.

I wonder what kind of stock media recorder it's gonna come with CF or SSD?

SSD would be killer and may have better bit rates? but at the same time CF is be convenient and can cut down on weight/cost for on the go.

IF the Scarlet will have an S35 sensor (and will be Epic-S), then it won't have 120fps.
I'd rather keep it as a 2/3sensor camera, with 3K/120fps.

If you are hyping the announcement as much as you have been, it shouldn't come as a surprise that people will have very high expectations.

Good grief!

Please read what I wrote again. I didn't say if the Scarlet wasn't S35 Jim misled people. I said Jim implied those people wanting an S35 would get their wish and that's why "I'm fairly confident an S35 (or similar) sized sensor is forthcoming." Two different things.

In fact, I didn't even mention Scarlet until AFTER I mentioned the part about being misleading. You're conflating two different thoughts.

What I said was I DON'T THINK JIM INTENTIONALLY MISLED PEOPLE. Therefore, people WILL get their S35 from RED. It's my way of saying JIM WOULDN'T LIE about that. That statement had nothing to do with what the camera would be called. Here I am trying to calm people's fears about not getting an S35 and somehow I become the bad guy.

Now, I happen to believe the S35 will fall in the Scarlet line. THAT'S what I might be wrong about. I don't think I'm wrong about the S35 part, whether it ends up being called Scarlet, Epic-S or something else.

Have I cleared this up?

I understand exactly what you said. You believe that there will be an S35 camera released on Nov 3.

I could care less what it's named. What I do take issue w/ is that if this doesn't happen, the belief that people have been misled.

What I'm saying is very simple. If an S35 camera is not released, no one has been misled--intentionally or otherwise.

If Scarlet is what it was when we last had official specs, a 2/3 sensor camera that can shoot raw with 3k resolution and that I can afford it then I will be happy ! VERY HAPPY! Anything beyond that is icing on the cake and beyond what I could have dreamed of ever asking for.

For crying out loud! You really DON'T understand what I wrote. You're still equating two different thoughts.

Some people were nervous because Epic-S is not on the roadmap. When asked, Jim wrote, "If you are nervous, you are not committed." Yet, the worrying persisted. So, unless he's misleading us, which I DON'T think he is in any way:

1) An S35 is coming because Jim hinted at it.

2) It may be in the Scarlet family...we'll find out on Nov.3. If I'm wrong about it being a Scarlet...

3) It's still coming because Jim hinted at it.

Simple.

If you don't get that, I don't know what else to say.

EDIT: Perhaps it would help if I reworded the sentence to read, "So, unless PEOPLE think he's misleading us, which I DON'T think he is in any way..." Because I know things change a lot at RED, I don't take the possibility of an S35 not happening as a sign of being misled, but some might. My post was always pro-Jim, pro-Jim's word and, therefore, pro-S35.

EDIT to the previous edit: I guess there are three possibilities for why the worrying persisted about an S35 camera even after Jim reassured the Epic-S crowd they'd be taken care of.

1) People missed Jim's reassuring posts altogether.

2) People read them but didn't get the meaning.

3) People got the meaning but remained skeptical anyway. I don't know why they would but these were the people I was addressing regarding Jim being misleading.

Again, that statement had nothing to do with Scarlet or November 3.

I don't mind being disagreed with but I hate to be misunderstood.

2/3 economical consumer product? not sure we have to rehash the long list of films that found 2/3 commercially viable for big budgets.

Canon 5D are also used for big budget movies, tv series, commercials. So being used in... to me simply means good enough for.
So if 2/3 is used as aesthetic choice ... Perfect but most of the time is a budget choice and limitations are something one has to work with.

Brian,

If you want to make your post clear, make it obvious that your expectation of a cheaper Red S35 cameras has nothing to do w/ what we should expect from the November 3rd announcement.

If you feel that I'm conflating your belief that there will be a Epic-S/Scarlet S35-type camera w/ the Nov 3rd announcement, it's only because you posted in a thread that is discussing expectations surrounding that very announcement.

Anyway, I hope to have said my last on this subject.
