  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Expectations...

The best option would be a large sensor, either 4/3 or s35, bar none. I wish the run and gun crowd with go to a different manufacturer.

I teach filmmaking at a community college and we'll be able to buy a Scarlet system for our students to use. I don't really care about specs -- we'll be buying into the RED workflow. Besides, as specs improve, we will be able to upgrade rather than replace our cameras. That is already beyond my wildest dreams. All I can say is THANK YOU to Jim and the RED team for allowing my students to get hands-on experience in their own future.

Funny, yesterday I felt this coming to a head and scribbled a post that said Scarlet was "5K 120FPS $1,000, buy one get one free" - but decided not to post and become embroiled ....
I went for a long walk in the mountains.

If Scarlet is the ONLY announcement. I am going to be disappointed.... some of us just want to hear more about RED RAY and the RED LASER PROJECTOR - a demo would be insane Nov 3 @ Red Studios Hollywood (nudge nudge, wink, wink))

Scarlet is a given, I don't expect anything more than what's been said other than maybe a switch to a S35 sensor. I have to say though, I certainly wouldn't mind hearing more about those RED Anamorphics! ;)

Other than the Scarlet announcement, I hear Graeme and Jarred are brushing up on their vaudeville song and dance routine. ( :

Considering what is currently being done on RED 1 and Epic, I think most of us should be worrying about our own shortcomings, not the camera's.

.... Get real. Get real before November 3rd. Or you will be unnecessarily disappointed. Which is totally unnecessary.

Jim

Thank you.... It was getting pretty ridiculous...

I have read a lot of the posts regarding Scarlet. There are so many unrealistic expectations that it takes the wind out of our sails.

Some people apparently have no idea what realistic is.

What you have done so far is nothing short of incredible and it does make people kinda euphoric - hence the fun with wishing for specs that are out of this world. The original specs you released on the Scarlet STILL blow me (and everyone else) away... Red is about to service a whole lot more customers!!!!

While I 100% agree with Jim's words, I do feel as though expectations have been escalated not entirely on their own, considering the many comments such "most important announcement in RED history", "never be out of back order" etc.

Either way, it's going to blow away the competitors, as stated, it's just a matter of how much. I'm guessing a lot.

I don't know why everyone is hoping Scarlet has a S35 sensor. You already have 2 Red cameras with those. S35 means big, expensive lenses.

I hope Scarlet has a 2/3" or smaller sensor so we can use lightweight, inexpensive glass. And it doesn't need to be 5K - Arri has already proven that people are happy shooting true 2K for many projects, as long as the camera has a good dynamic range and simple workflow.

I envision Scarlet as an Alexa/F900/F23 killer more than a poor-man's Epic. It brings Red into every kind of TV production, including ENG, while at the same time being affordable to the mass market.

If you want a big, 100% high-end pro camera, buy an Epic. Many projects can benefit from small, fast and inexpensive.

+1 on 2/3rds

How will we know in what place in the list did we fall into? Sure, we'll be able to place an order, hundreds of people, if not thousands, all within seconds from each other

Got the new iPhone today . . . disappointed!!

Heh, people will always have some weird sense of entitlement, and dream crazy dreams. It's all good, history is being written here, and it's a good history!

I'm not too concerned about the details of the specs. They will be amazing, we all know this. The price will be a fantastic value, we know this too. Even if the camera doesn't do every last trick I could imagine, I don't care, because we are buying into a modular camera system - and we can swap out bits and pieces to get exactly what we need. There's a lot of thought behind this, and we all are going to benefit, greatly. Kudos to Red for having the balls to do things right.

Jim said Scarlet would have HDRx and 4K -since Jim is the de facto evangelist when it comes to the holy grail that is 4K. Even if 48FPS is the max, everyone's a winner. I haven't had a need to speculate or comment about any of this because I have an MX, two Epic-M's, and an X on the way (like I need another camera). Scarlet will be a wicked little tool that puts 'pro' into the hands of everyone, and HDRx alone is worth whatever Scarlet's price point is.

When did Jim, or anyone at RED, ever say Scarlet would be 4K?

It's best to have no expectations. I have come to expect nothing at all from RED.

Then they tend to always surprise and amaze me.
