  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Expectations...

I guess that the "surprise" will come both from a very good value for a nice starting pack (brain with accessoiries) and from one unexpected extra-feature/revised spec.

And still my expectations are high.
I expect not to replace my 12 year old car to buy a Red camera.
I expect to earn an Epic with the investment in the product you are going to announce 3th of november (and still not having a new car).
I expect to earn a new car by the investment in the Epic.
And because of the compatitative attitute to Canon I secretly expect a bigger sensor for a scarler price.

I don't expect, but secretly hope I can welcome Red's new camera in my home before januari (I know, it's crazy).

Elsie, I'm not attacking you, but that presumption is a Reduser creation and an example of what I mentioned in an earlier post. To my knowledge, no one at RED said anything about Nov. 3rd being about ANYTHING other than Scarlet. That came from guessing and speculation.

RED shouldn't have to clarify something that they didn't state in the first place.
Brian, if true, it would be nice to have that spelled out. When Jim says "Be there or be square!":undecided: I assume he's talking about everyone. The announcement thread was started on Reduser after all, and not on Scarletuser.

At some point soon, the battle won't be cameras. It will be affordable delivery systems for all these beautiful pixels...currently so far behind the systems of acquisition.

I'm hoping that November 3rd has an ace up that sleeve.

Finding new paying distribution models for Independent Films is surely the next challenge. Hopefully RED is on to this...their REDray & 4K projector being the first step along the way!

Then hopefully audiences will become more willing to accept foreign films and unknown actors. Am I dreaming?

Jarred did his impossible to decode 'heh heh heh....' when someone asked if there'd be EPIC related news November 3rd in one of the other threads here. They're teasing us, they're loving it, driving us nuts. So yeah, I think they're saying more will be announced. Minimum is Scarlet and EPIC share the same codebase/library so anything they've decided to do in software for Scarlet will be available to both. And up from there.

I'm just going to wait for November 3rd and see.

The biggest thing for me is will it still be in my budget range for this year? The last price hike for fixed plus the extra bits n bobs you need are no problem, double it and... it'll be next year for me. However much it trounces the competitions offerings, I'd be bummed - I want in *now* :)

I won't be mad at RED for whatever final specs and price-point Scarlet is released at. Past a certain $ amount though, it's out of my personal budget range at this time.

And that's totally fair. I'd very much prefer RED, but if it's not economically responsible, then I'll pick up a Sony F3 or take a look at whatever Canon is coming out with.

This isn't a threat, or anything. My end goal is RED. 100%. But if in the here and now I have to take a detour through Sony or Canon, well, so be it. I'll pick up some jobs, make some cash, and invest in RED products down the line, in a year or 3.

True, but I think RED sees their product line as a whole and not each piece in a vacuum. I just read in Post that "Criminal Minds" switched to Epics this season but still supplements that footage with Canons or GoPros when space is a consideration, even with the small size of the Epic. If RED can supplant those cameras with Scarlets in most cases, it's an end-to-end win for them. That's just one example of the possibilities.

RED seems to be trying to build a modular universe out of individual, modular systems with a powerful, common and easy to use workflow and upgrade path.

My impression is that the Scarlet announcement is being played up as a shot across the bow of the entire industry, from acquisition to exhibition. I think in their minds, it concerns everybody whether you plan on buying a Scarlet or not.

I'm hoping that I can afford the Scarlet on the third. Part of my Scarlet fund is going to a new roof on my house. I glad I started saving because my fund has saved me a few times with unexpected expenses. I think it will be close.

Scarlet Is What It Is.

RED is making it so it will be more than enough.

I hate guessing, no point.

I expect it to be able to shoot great video and stills and destroy the competition.

So... I clearly won't be disappointed!

Ha! Really looking forward to those raisin box specs Jim posted. Too funny.

Been saying this for ages. :)

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread...-try-and-count&p=821834&viewfull=1#post821834

I think there is an inherent problem with this Scarlet discussion, however. There is a camp of people who are praying for the best camera possible at a very low price point. This was, I believe, spawned by the initial "3K for $3K" mantra back at NAB 2008 and there is a whole sect of people in that category who are expecting a replacement for their HVX. You might say "well RED has stated they are making products for pros, not prosumers" but I am telling you that expectation is there. There is a whole Scarletuser forum drooling for this. And in one sense, I completely understand that. If you want the whole enchilada, there's Epic. I have no idea what Scarlet's specs are going to be but if it's a slightly feature-less Epic in the $15k price range I think it's the wrong move. The indie guys get left out and the big guys will just buy Epic anyway. That's my take.

The other problem is that not only are people wanting it as cheap as possible, they're speculating it will have ridiculous specs. And of course you can't have both... so one camp is going to inevitably be disappointed. Jim has made it pretty clear that this isn't going to compete with Epic, so I don't know why people keep guessing configurations resembling that.

Perhaps they can meet both groups' expectations by bringing out two models: a cheaper 2/3" fixed lens model, and a more intermediate level s35 removable lens version. That would actually be the original plan: the Scarlet fixed and the (now) Epic-S. But a 2/3" sensor isn't going to have 4K's worth of pixels on it and an Epic-S isn't a Scarlet (it's an Epic), so something needs to budge. Then again, I know nothing about building a camera so take this all with a grain of salt.

Personally, I think the speculation on this website borders on frustrating craziness sometimes but I know some people find it "fun" so I hold my tongue. If Jim is asking people to calm down a little however, (or at least risk being very disappointed), I hope people heed those wishes a little bit.

Just my 2¢.

Spot on post. +1

Can anyone explain the “obsession” with 120 fps?

I think it mostly has to do with the fact that many want to be able to capture fast action shots (and use it for slow-motion playback in projects) that simply aren't possible with the current crop of mainstream cameras.

Same with timelapse. We want to be able to cover the range of slow to fast, in one package, without needing to get a specialized camera just for those shots.

At least that's my reasoning.

It’s funny these Dutch guys seem to really understand electronics it seems (wink, ..wink).

So what you are saying is that in terms of “code” that Scarlet (assuming its even still called Scarlet) will have the DNA of EPIC?

Eric

Also (foot note to other discussion), there’s no way that the announcements are restricted to Scarlet ONLY, I think there may be a “new deal” on the table and more of the dust sheet will obviously be pulled off their “quantum” road map. I suspect that beyond hardware there is something that they give that the other’s cannot… above and beyond “RED Spirit” or “RED attitude”.

I sense something new beyond the obvious…That's why it's burning a "hole" through Jim's head.

Come on guys THINK! Think hard...On the other hand, you can’t make serious plans around a guessing game can you… really (blind faith or otherwise)...

Its twice the spec of 60p broadcast which is just around the corner. (at least in your part of the world, we in pal-land lament the lack of those 5 extra frames...)

This means you will be future proofed for standard slow-mo

For me, the specs are only half of it. The biggest reason to get a Scarlet in my opinion is the motion picture look that RED does so well...something my old Canon 5D and most other digital cameras cannot do. The thing about RED is that it does not look digital. All other digital cameras look digital. Irrespective of specs, that is the single most important reason to choose RED as far as I am concerned.

I, for one, don't expect a 4K Scarlet ever. I expect a replacement for S-16 film, as 1080 was supposed to be, but failed for cinema.
3K RAW with RED's tools will smoke anyone else's overcompressed, mpeg-long GOP, wanna-bee workable files.
And If I feel like bitchin, I can always try to remember how to load an XTR mag.

I have read a lot of the posts regarding Scarlet. There are so many unrealistic expectations that it takes the wind out of our sails.

Some people apparently have no idea what realistic is.

"Why not 28K at 1000fps RAW in a raisin box for $800?"

We are so happy to have a complete competitive advantage. We consider our customers as one of us. What we have always done is beat the competition in price/performance. But the misguided expectations for Scarlet are killing me.

You should expect a lot from us. But within reason. Really.

Measure us against our competitors... not your fantasies.

Nothing competes with EPIC. Nothing will compete with Scarlet... except your wildest dreams.

Get real. Get real before November 3rd. Or you will be unnecessarily disappointed. Which is totally unnecessary.

Jim

First off... I agree 100% Jim.

Second, I think you should understand that this mentality is a product of your own hype engine and what you have already accomplished in this industry. You are a master (And I mean that in every sense. Can I take a class? Please?) of building hype (and destroying what people have become accustomed to as releases from these other manufacturers). I would take it as a compliment that people think like this, but... let them worry about being disappointed from their own grossly high expectations. This is proof that you are changing reality with each release.

See you Nov 3rd. I can't wait.
