  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EVGA GTX 680 for Mac

I am running these perfectly with Premiere/AE CS6 in 3 Mac Pros, but you have to add the cards manually to the Adobe supported cards list for them to use CUDA.
*Update Premiere/AE to latest updated version from Adobe- if you do the procedure below before updating you will need to do this again AFTER the updates again.

Premiere Pro CS6
1) Need to run GPUSniffer. Open Terminal Window and copy and paste this command:
/Applications/Adobe\ Premiere\ Pro\ CS6/Adobe\ Premiere\ Pro\ CS6.app/Contents/GPUSniffer.app/Contents/MacOS/GPUSniffer

2) Open Terminal Window and copy and paste this command:
sudo nano /Applications/Adobe\ Premiere\ Pro\ CS6/Adobe\ Premiere\ Pro\ CS6.app/Contents/cuda_supported_cards.txt

You will see the list of supported cards- add the name to this list and save (control-x then Y for yes and save with same name).

After Effects CS6
1) Need to run GPUSniffer. Open Terminal Window and copy and paste this command:
/Applications/Adobe\ After\ Effects\ CS6/Adobe\ After\ Effects\ CS6.app/Contents/GPUSniffer.app/Contents/MacOS/GPUSniffer

2) Open Terminal Window and copy and paste this command:
sudo nano /Applications/Adobe\ After\ Effects\ CS6/Adobe\ After\ Effects\ CS6.app/Contents/raytracer_supported_cards.txt

As before, you will see the list of supported cards- add the name to this list and save (control-x then Y for yes and save with same name).

Also, Rob-ART Morgan just did a good review here:

Thanks for the post and useful information.

Very nice DaVinci results form GTX 285 (22.2) to GTX 680 (55.2).

I'm excited to install this card. Looks like for games it's 2x as fast as the GTX285. When I get a free second I'll make a comparison tests for you guys interested.

NVIDIA Quadro 4000 or this??

NVIDIA Quadro 4000 or this??

So I need to toss a new card in my mac tower. It's primary purpose is to boost performance in Premiere Pro/CS6 suite, take advantage of the mercury playback engine. Would you guys, with your sagely knowledge, recommend this new GTX680 or the Quadro4000? I know the 4000 is a couple of hundred bucks more, but I am willing to shell out a little extra to get good performance.

My next computer is going to be a PC. more bang for your buck and the fact that I don't use Final Cut Pro anymore is the final nail.

Just got the 680 installed in my Macpro 5,1 8-core and ran a few tests in Resolve. Compared to the Quadro 4000 I was running, it only transcodes RedRaw a few fps faster, up to 14 or so for 5k HD 6:1, and speeds up the Alexa ProRes 4x4/LogC to Rec709 transcodes by maybe 10-15%

But it doubles the speed of ArriRaw transcodes, from the 15fps I was getting with the Quadro, to 30fps, which is a big deal.

Oh and Sonnet fixed the drivers for the QIO 3, it works in 10.8.3 now, have a card in the reader right now.

Selling the Quadro card by the way, PM me if you want it

I bought this Mac GTX 680 and it's great. But ended up getting rid of my Mac Pro

Still have it, box, been used for maybe an hour.

Warrantied still and can supply the receipt from newegg. Let me know if anyone is interested in her.

I just picked up the GTX Titan, so I'm allllll set.

PSU Requirements?

PSU Requirements?

Hi guys,

I have installed the Gainward GeForce GTX 680 Phantom 4GB into my 2009 Mac Pro.

Are you guys using additional PSU's? I have the 6 and 8 pin adapters for the motherboard but they don't seem to supply enough power to the card, is this normal? It refuses to boot.

I have made a special cable that runs from the 8pin on the card out the case to an external PSU. The 6 pin runs to the motherboard. It's a drag lumping that around.

Thanks!

Ah, you've used the PC version...not the Mac version. Yes, it requires more power than your Mac Pro power supply can provide, that's why they also make a "Mac Edition" that uses less power and doesn't require an external power supply.
