Hi fellow Redusers,

As the title says, can't afford even a battle tested Bomb, so wondering who might have experience and recommendations with alternate EVF's, such as Cineroid, Zacuto, SmallHD DP4, or other...?

Thanks for your time,

Best

Lliam

I have the bomb and as good at is it, I have used the Z-Finder and that was equally good and had some features that were nice to have.

Have you considered adding a loop to your red 5" lcd?

I have the Bomb OLED and the Zacuto. The Bomb is easily a better image... but it had better be for three times the price. What's cool about the Zacuto is you can use it AND the touchscreen. Also, the image is bigger via the Zacuto, so I fee like I'm more likely to nail focus with it. It is kind of big and ugly, but it surely gets the job done on budget.

Thanks for your responses everyone, much appreciated.

@ Louis, thanks mate. While the bomb clearly kicks the Zacuto's ass, great to know you felt it was comparable in getting the job done.

@ Shane, thanks, the Alphatron looks like a solid option. Can't seem to find it in stock anywhere atm though.

@ Sid, heh, yeah sure have. I love the 5" touch. And have gone a little crazy experimenting to be honest trying to come up with a well balanced shoulder rig that would also allow me to use it with a loupe. But too many problems created in trying to work around it. Gotten away with it till now, but I'm sick of compromising and an EVF will let me put the rig where it is best suited I think and allow me to focus on getting the best results. Thanks for the thought though.

@ Christopher. Thanks. Really appreciate your feedback. The Zacuto is looking like the best budget option for me I think.

I've always thought your carbonite scope looks like a great product Jay. But damned if I can achieve the kind of idyllic placement of the Touch when shoulder mounted that I'm after - certainly not without investing more than the cost of an EVF... What's your shoulder rig config?

I tried my Zacuto EVF Pro with my Scarlet-X and found that the screen is somehow under/overscan. Anyone knows how to fix that? I sent an email to Zacuto but haven't heard any reply yet.

By the way, the EVF has been updated to latest version.

That's interesting T.K. Appreciate if you could keep me posted on that. Christopher or louis are you able to comment if you happen across this thread again?

Thanks Daniel! Did you have a look at it yourself on one of your Scarlets?

Hi Lliam,

I demo'd the Zacuto Z-Finder EVF Pro and the SmallHD DP4 EVF. Both have looping HDMI inputs and can also be used as monitors by flipping up the eyepiece.

Zacuto Pros: Good image, thumbwheel adjustable diopter, more on-screen tools.
Zacuto Cons: More expensive, smaller screen, powered only by Canon LP-E6 type battery.
I would avoid the less expensive Z-Finder EVF because of its plastic construction, lack of diopter adjustment, and non flip-up design.
The eyepiece provides a sharp, flat image and the diopter adjustment range is wide enough to accomodate just about anyone.

SmallHD Pros: Good image, larger screen, less expensive, more power options (Canon, Sony, Nikon, AA, D-Tap), generous accessory bundle available.
SmallHD Cons: Lack of diopter adjustment, slight pin cushion distortion in eyepiece.
The DP4 EVF works better as an on-camera monitor than the Zacuto because of its larger size, but the eyepiece is not as good. It has a slight pin cushion distortion but it's not fatal. Diopter adjustment is via screw-in stackable filters that you must buy separately, or you could go for the accessory bundle (+$100) that includes the diopters, battery adapters, and a bunch of other useful cables and hardware.

Both units provide great images and will allow you to frame and focus in bright sunlight. Both have plenty of on-screen tools like false color, peaking, framelines, etc. The Zacuto also has zebras and a frame store function. Neither one is a Bomb. (firecrackers, maybe) Both are way cheaper than a Bomb.

The EVF from a Red One will work also....

Hey Liam
Long time no talk ...

This set up works for me ...I guess you call this configuration "waiting for monitor flip". However for hand held we usually hang it right way up off the MB.

But I reckon a loupe with a 9inch arm you can do it easily, without the flip for not a lot.

P.S. Having just seen Bob's post EVF for $399 sounds sweet gotta question the rez. though for focusing

P.S.S thanks for all those Linkedin quals. ......you must have had one too many wines ; )

Love my Carbonite scope. Have not used my Bomb since I got it.

Hi Vance,
How do you focusing with Carbonite scope and touch compared to EVF ? I find monitor is a bit soft and focus assist too sharp, so focus is hard to judge either way...
