Making a $6000 upgrade cost cheaper doesn't help them get new customers. At the moment, a typical setup for Epic runs around $45000 to $55000. That is the thing they need to address if they feel the F5 and F55 is likely to impact their sales. Their price reduction is a mixture of a goodwill thing and a concrete business decision.

Let's see what RED announce tomorrow.

Ha, just read a chat with the Sony team that has been posted online. INTERESTING. Sony has not announced the price yet, and it seems like their primary concern is to protect customers ROI and business model of their customers. Not just winning a short term victory. Sony could probably finance their pro-camera department on game and console sales, if they wanted to, and drive their competitors out of business, but why would they do that?

BTW: I think Rob has been one of the few who've contributed interesting comments to this thread.

IMO any suggestion that Sony are concerned about their customers ROI
is misplaced and not the way a company like Sony or any other business operates. If they thought this way they would
not have leaked a price point for their cameras, and would still be charging the same inflated prices as before.
Be under no illusion they have been brought to this point through competition and everything they do is about
maintaining their market share. It's just the way business operates.

EDIT: This is not a criticism, I like what I have seen of their cameras, and like any potential customer
will make a decision based on a number of factors. One thing is certain if this 20K price point for the
F55 is true then this proves that competition works and is good for customers.

Sony claimed they were interested in their customers ROI when pricing their products, I don't think they are lying, I guess most DOP's and owners are quite loyal to their brands...

With respect Michael they are selling a product and like every sales person I've ever met are interested in making sales, sure they want to look after their customers, but not at the expense of their own bottom line. Sometimes sales talk is exactly that, it doesn't mean they are deliberately lying, just telling people what they want to hear at a particular time. For me the proof is in the price; it doesn't lie, they are offering the camera at this price because competition is forcing them to, and it's the price the market will sustain, that's just the way business operates.

...pretty good price. ...definitely gives the SCARLET some competition.

Just noticed on the same site they post, so if that's the max what will the discounted price be in 6 months. Just noticed the C300 price has dropped on CVP in the UK to £7900? It's clearly going to become a price war.

Good for us consumers - not sure where it leaves the manufacturers?

October 30 update: Our MIP Maximum Invoice Price has been set @ 18995 Euro.

so if Sony decides not to announce their prices, will RED still announce their new prices within the next 48 hours?

wow, how can they already have prices, F5 for €15000, quite a good price

The Epic will be a more relevant day to day tool when transcoding is a thing of the past. In my television and advertising world, that is the single most common reason producers are turned off by RED. In my opinion they will look for any other camera format that doesn't require hours and hours of transcoding prior to edit.

Instead of price wars, and trying to figure out how to stuff more "k" in the camera...they should make a less time consuming workflow solution.

The expense, and weight of the Meizner module and having to carry a new style of media card, a new and different card reader and always being saddled with the weight of wireless i don't need 90% of the time...makes that ProRes solution in the Meizner module undesirable for me.

Make the workflow simpler and less time consuming, and RED will be more competitive in the market place. (in my opinion) I'm extremely reticent to invest in any more RED products until there is a better solution to transcoding.

Good point, Mike. The key here is the debayering technology. As cool as the RedRocket is, for a PCI card, it is ancient - and you can build an entire 16 core PC for the same price. There have been plenty of threads asking for a new RedRocket or opening up development of GPU debayering, and you can be sure Red is actively working on such an obvious bottleneck, but playing these kinds of developments close to the chest are just good business tactics on their part right now. The technology is readily available to make the RedRocket 2 many times more powerful with monitor output functionality, and it really shouldn't cost more than a GTX 690. I can just imagine the outcry when the new card is released. It's cheaper! And faster, with more functionality! What are you trying to do, Red? Bankrupt me? :willy_nilly:
