  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Don't know if this has been posted, but at cinematography.com Jim stated that there is a quick mod possible for the epic/scarlet brain that makes it change sensibility (ISO 25-250//ISO 200-2000)

As for replaceable sensors... we have done the next best thing with replaceable "brains" in EPIC and Scarlet. I completely agree with you. You can have an ISO 25-250 brain. Or an ISO 200-2000 brain.

"One clarification... with EPIC you can have an ISO 25-250 brain or an ISO 200-2000 brain. These aren't different brains... it is a quick mod to the same brain. Like loading different film stocks."

EDIT: Seems this has been talked about in the 'Arri Alexa and Mysterium-X...' thread in 'Recon'

"...it will be a fairly simple procedure."

I'm not totally against that. Shooting a drama series with a MX right now and the strong NDIR (1.2 and 1.5) make the color less richer then without.

There is always time to switch between 2 brains during a setup change from outside to inside or day versus night scene, but the downside is i don't thing its good to switch brain too often, since you will risk to break or use the connector... on the long run, its not good for the module connector, i guess...

Changing the OLPF... adds ND. Easy. 4 bolts and pop out/in.

Jim

The low pass filter is user changeable on the Epic, normally it is clear, we are
Coming out with ones with various ND strengths.

Just curious, why exactly would you want to change the OLPF? I thought the OLPF was just for blurring out high-frequency detail that causes aliasing.

You aren't losing the LP filter... just adding an ND to it. They are coupled together.

You really want me to answer that? :-)

Jim

Touché. :)

EDIT:

Is it safe to make the assumption that by shooting at lower ISOs now we will not be sacrificing any DR (given non HDRx mode) as was the case with Red One?

Oh wait. I see. By inserting these OLPF NDs you reduce the "virtual" sensitivity of the sensor. It is not actually changing the native sensor sensitivity, but just adding a high quality ND at the OLPF and adapting the ISO read out appropriately?

This is fantastic news. With ever higher sensor speeds and the trend for shallow depth we have entered ND hell. If the video camera only ever did one thing right it was internal ND filters. Fast and clean. Please make the swap- out of the OPLF as field friendly as possible. Over half the shoots I do require both interior and exterior shots on the same day.

It may be worth having some kind of electronic or physical indication of the OPLF installed as I could see potential for confusion when picking up a rental Epic for a night shoot and it still has the ND OPLF installed.

Is the IR filter included in the OPLF? If so this could be good news for anybody wanting to try out some funky IR shooting.
