  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic X!

Nope. That's what he's said so far. Hopefully, he'll change his mind, but it's his company.

I am very excited about the EPIC X announcement, very generous of RED indeed. I would like to wait for Monstro but if there was indeed an upgrade path that did not involve buying a new brain then I would jump on the EPIC X in a minute. This is wishful thinking I believe unless I missed something. Jim has been pretty clear on upgrades in the modular world of RED means buying a new brain? Correct me if I am wrong.

Wouldn't be cool if the ''Select'' in, Mysterium-X Select, mean you can select other sensors!

But the thing with monstro is that the sensor size is bigger than the R1 can handle in terms of optics, aint it?
If so, I dont think there is an option in order to upgrade the R1 to monstro, it kind of seens that the upgrade path ends there. (as long as keeping the R1 body)
BUT if you could upgrade to a FF35 epic then the deal would be different. I am still confused if the standard primes would work on the FF size...

What I don't understand is that Jim said we could upgrade the R1 to Mysterium-X then to Monstro. If we can do that with the R1, then we could certainly do that with the Epic-X. Monstro sensors start with the FF35. It doesn't say that the s35 won't be upgraded to Monstro. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Isn't the FF35mm brain capable of all that the S35mm one can do + more?

"More" being:

- Bigger sensor.
- Bigger resolution.
- More DR.

If it's so - I'd take the FF35mm, yes please. I can't see a reason why they'd limit lens mount options or other things.

[But I'm planning an evil new rant attack for windowed 3K/60 fps ].

Let's not forget that Monstro is the third generation of RED sensors. The price difference is ~ 5000 $, which is similar to the sensor upgrade option for RED1.

For Scarlet, the difference is even sweeter.

And you can use it for stills [full frame] and whatnot.

13+ stops [+ 1~2 more with oversampling to 2K] is breaking the "film" barrier for good.

Ohhhh, I need 9750 $ sooo baad.

Yeah but the upgrade path for R1 to EPIC X is for the S35 Brain... with the time frame set, the difference between onw of the two would be less than a couple of months (It will change I know!) But we are speculating here. My believe is that you would want to upgrade most of the time to whatever sensor works best in terms of DR and Resolution. So once you have an Epic with misterium x wouldnt you want it in monstro? I mean, dont get me wrong, I love the path that its now open, but I am thinking how to invest my money the best in such a short time. (in terms of how technology runs and leaves you behind) Just a thought I wanted to share.

As far as I know, nothing is keeping anyone to stick there favorite PL lenses on a FF35 or the 645.
You won't be using the whole sensor but the part you'll use will look darn good.

So I love the Red One- seriously, it's a sickness. When I leave town it stays at someone else's house. I get butterflies when the case is open.

So I was wondering- is there any chance a red owner could pay full price for the Epic X package and keep their red one, or do you have to trade the camera in?

That would be so cool if we can do that. And if the Epic X can have Sensor Upgrades like the R1.

Does anyone know for sure that the FF35 sensor would fit a 35mm film lens? Because I thought that ff35 refers to still frame sizes.. which are different.

I'm not sure, but the lens is round so if it's wide enough it should also be tall enough. FF35 still film is taller and wider than super 35, but i imagine that a 35mm lens is a 35mm lens no matter what, so the glass should cover a sensor up to 35mm, otherwise old 35mm nikons would vig on standard film. I don't think cine lenses would be "smaller" than other 35mm lenses, but i'm not a glass guy.

I was looking around on this forum, and here is a great discussion on lens formats, so I was wrong, I just assumed that 35mm lenses all had the same image circle size (big enough to cover 35mm) but apparently the nature of the optics an the design intent of the lens play a big role in what format you can shoot with which lens.

So what I think the thread below is saying is that this is good news for anyone that has a set of ff35 lenses because a smaller sensor will still produce a great image. Any glass that was designed for a smaller sensor though (to save on optics cost) will not have enough coverage (vignette) or you will lose range on the lens if you mount the glass for ff coverage of the sensor.

Now the question is- I have some old very slow, but very big glass for shooting imax stuff, i'm wondering if it would be worth changing the bayonet for ff35 use?
