  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-X STAGE 3 and 3.5 Now Begins...

Ok, maybe too much exclamation marks and capital letters confused you... I'm not assuming that RED is trying to cheat its clients. I think they make the best cameras I've ever used. BUT what can be seen only as a "gift", I think is something else. And I believe it's RIGHT Red has its interest in having back "old" R1 bodies.
Anyway, my first (criticized) post was only due that only a few months ago I spent $5K for X upgrading and if I spent $10K I would have changed all my camera system. It could be logical give the "two sensor cameras" a different value...

I think $10K are a lot of money (maybe not for all RED users...). Mainly if you live in a country with 50% taxation... I would have really appreciated to have a MX trade-in. Period.

I'll go on with my LOVELY R1-MX!!!

I think the consensus thinking is that George is right. Red may have figured out a use for the cameras since they made the original offer, but when the offer was made it was pretty clear that it was being done to compensate for the R-1 no longer being a product that wouldn't become obsolete due to Red's decision to go modular... i.e., Epic.

Why else would Red pay $17,500 for a camera that they can manufacture new for only a percentage of that cost?

Well for instance, replace some of the boards and the sensor inside with a future dragon sensor, and then resell it as battletested for one. That also renders obsolence obsolete......
Selling the same camera twice would be genius, no?

So many assumptions and over-thinking ... Maybe there is a flying spaghetti monster... Ok... May he give you free meatballs and cheese... Red gave a generous gift, event the MX upgrade alone... Canon NEVER did this, ever. You don't like Red, get an Alexa, try to trade it it and see what happens. Or a 5D MK II which is already being rebated everywhere.

At the end of the day Red seem to be getting more grief from people who want something for nothing (above and beyond a refund on the camera) than thanks for giving back so much.

This worries me because it may (and I hope im wrong) affect how what customer loyalty programs they offer in the future.

We went stage 2 and it seems to have been the best option. We kept our fantastic MX cameras and got a huge discount on EPICs. (there was a $1250 discount for having an MX upgrade too) This never happened when we bought new sony or panny cams.

I know it seems harsh, but it just isnt fair to value an MX body as being worth anywhere near an EPIC package. Our MX upgrade paid for itself because we did it so early. If you start demanding refunds for every little handle and accessory that isnt future compatible, theyll end up having to pay you to take the EPIC.

Having said all this, I understand people can get frustrated. But, RED always say that things can and will change.

If you can afford it, move forward, grab the EPIC whilst its on the table and you wont look back.

I think it's very very bad rule: how can they value the SAME price for a M and a MX?!?!?!?!..... Many months ago I spent about $5K for upgrading the sensor. And now it hase the same value of the M?????????????????
And all the R1 accessories? I have to try selling to some R1 owner... but it would have been great if RED has accepted all their stuff for trade-in...

I couldn't agree more; RED should cancel Stage 3 forthwith and let anyone who wants to own an EPIC buy one at full price. That's fair to everyone, right? I mean that's what Sony, Arri, or any other respectable normal company would do...

Some people...

Good suggestion....RED TEAM please look into it....But one question I ask that didnt you earn money in the days you have owned an MX or the R1...most of us has recovered our investment on R1 and the MX upgrade ..and if RED is giving a full credit for R1 price against EPIC stage III or 3.5 its the best christmas gift or new year gift one can have..

Harcharan:prrr:

If you are going to replace the sensor, then what does it matter if the trade-in was an M or MX sensor?

I feel like shooting myself when I read the posts I find here sometimes.

This is a pun, not a fact.

Moving past the odd unhappiness over the Stage 3/3.5 option...which is an awesome gift by RED but sadly you can't please everyone...

Anyone care to Speculate when the earliest Stage 3 acceptance of R1 cams may start and the latest most will start seeing cams?

I'm thinking I'd see mine (August '09) around start of March...given that Stage 3 hasn't even started though I'm thinking April time...

April seems a little far off to me... but I can see how that could happen.

It could happen if: The orders for Scarlet were so overwhelming that they had to shift all production lines over to Scarlet to make an immediate dent in the demand.

JUSTIFICATION: Since Stage 2 people have had their deposits down for (what seems like) years, and since Stage 3 customers are getting an equal package now, this serves to equal out the value between Stage 2 and Stage 3 while getting the Scarlet line of cameras established.

Plus, we must remember that Red is opening a bricks and mortar store somewhere in Asia that will sell Epics off the shelf. They may be having to stock those shelves to fulfill that promise.

Of course that could be just a sample of deranged thinking on my part and the reality may be that a flood of Stage 3 cameras will be ready to ship at any time now.

Just wondering if anyone in Stage 3 has received the email to ship in your RED camera yet. We are in Stage 3 as well, just wanted to see if the initial camera send in process has started.

I am all signed- and paid-up for Stage 3 and, with a R1 number of 348, am near the top of the informal Stage 3 list on this site.
But I have not yet been asked to send in my R1, although, when I pressed my BS rep last month, he said he expected it to be called for before the end of the year. That was probably no more than a wild-ass guess on his part.

What you save on EPIC AKS for free and discounted body price is way more than your 5k upgrade on MX sensor. Do the math no better offer than stage upgrades. Wish I had bought more MX cameras before the cutoff!!

Doesn't look like Epic 3's are coming this year
