  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-X ETA Update?

My predictions! Seeing that this is a speculative thread

Don't expect Scarlets till early mid 2012 and I'll be surprised if Epic Xs ship in any sort of quantities (like a 1000) by the end of 2011.

The Ms are rolling out but not in any great quantity or speed. I paid for mine over month ago, still no show. Very frustrating.

Sorry to be a downer but don't start planning any sort of production dates and getting your hopes up. Plan around what's available now.

You paid $58K for an M a month ago, and still no delivery? I figured that you wouldn't get the email offer to sell you one unless there was one on the shelf ready for you? Tying up that much money and not delivering for a month (and when it ships, will it be complete?) is inexcusable...
 
I always thought that when you put down the 58K was closer to them delivering since there is also a timer on when you have to put that 58K down right? Something like a weeks time when getting the notice?

Given I'm sure its harder to flush these out as quickly but if its been a month then I can't imagine the difficulty their facing with the X's.

Real shame since I was going on that June thing starting since Jannard and the team I figured were more likely to give a little more firmer and less optimistic dates after the last couple always being off kind of thing...

They did keep to their Tattoo program dates though, Dec/Jan starting...

So perhaps June...praying it will...I'd love to have an X in hand by September/October.

Maybe is not to late. Seems like Red is working hard to get Epic-Ms out of the door.....no mention at all of Epic-X. Read this post from this morning:

That post from Jarred should put an end to all optimism about Epic-X dates. if they are struggling to find parts for Ms, there is little hope for the X supply chain to ramp up anytime soon...

Although speculative, you are right, at least until an official statement is made from Red Co.

I'm no logician, but I'm not sure how much logical sense this makes.

We already knew that certain parts availability was constrained, so this is not new information. Of course, Red is struggling to find parts that are in short supply and will continue to struggle to find these parts until they are no longer in short supply, but that really says nothing about how long it will take before these parts makers are able to ramp up supplies or other manufacturers are able to step up to fill the gap, especially since we don't know what the parts are and the barriers of entry to manufacture them.

Me, too. Damn, it's a shame. I can only imagine how it must feel to RED, being sooooo close and probably now so far away through no fault of their own.

I might get sent to the back of the line for saying this, but for my little prodco and what we're looking to do in the next year- that is, better and better commercials plus a couple of beautiful, festival winning short films- I think our best route is RED MX, great glass, and SSDs. When Epic-X comes out, maybe we'll wait until Epic-S is available, and take Jim up on his offer of a discount on that brain. I want an Epic formfactor for stealthy shooting, and I dig HDR mode, but if I need 200 fps or whatever, I think most of the time that'd be a special rental situation. If Epic-X was out now, it'd be a different story, of course. But I have to allocate our meager resources to where they'll do the most good for us now, and continuing to wait on Epic-X just isn't viable for us, for now.
 
Why would you get sent to the back of the line for saying you would use a Red MX?

Oh, that's just me being flip based on something someone else said a while back. Sometimes being a RED customer is like being in a clubhouse with a big "No Girls Allowed" sign (ahem, Alexa). And we're all fanboys to a certain extent, even if we're working professionals. Why wouldn't we be? These tools are amazing, and I for one feel a oneness with my RED that I don't feel towards, say my edit bay. So we always want the latest and greatest toy, and Epic-X is a stunning thing of beauty indeed. Saying anything even remotely along the lines of "not worth it for me, for now" is tantamount to sacrilege.

And, of course, please keep in mind that I finally dropped my RED off for her MX upgrade at RED Hollywood this morning. I had been waiting, hoping, for Epic-X before this short I'm doing where half of it is in the dark. I finally had to bite the bullet and spend half my Epic-X money on the MX upgrade. To a bigger shop, I know, the $5,700 is not a big deal. To me, it's huge- it kinda forces me to wait on getting Epic-X now, unless I land some well-paying work soon. All about perspective, right? In the end, truth is this film's gonna look STUNNING on MX. Sure, the driving shots will be harder to get because she's a big compared to the Epic. But that's OK.

That is a crappy, obnoxious bit of FUD you wrote. People don't understand: it is way easier to find parts to make a break-even camera at 58K, than it is to find parts suppliers with low enough prices yo allow you to break even (let alone make a profit) at 28K. It's not like you can buy what's in an Epic over at Radio Shack.

It's 10 lbs body-only. You don't need all the gunk that is making it 35 lbs.
 
I'm continuing to be happy as the release is delayed; it gives me more time to save up for the upgrade and accessories.

The situation in Japan does bring up an interesting question in my mind though... why so much dependence on Japanese manufacturing? Does the U.S. lack high-tech manufacturing facilities? Or is it because the needed parts are tied up by patents owned by Japanese companies?
