I use the Epic with Sound Devices MixPre-D and Sennheiser EK/SK 100 G3 for scratch sound or for cases the sound does not need to be as good as my 788t because is convenient not to have to sync sound.

I recorded sound both with the MixPre-D and without it (meaning straight to the Epic through the W00d3n Cam3ra A-Box).

The sound that I get from the Sennheiser connected straight to the camera without the MixPre-D is cleaner!!

Am I doing something wrong? I got the Mix-Pre-D because I read the preamps on it are fantastic and it helps.

I set the Sensitvity on the transmitter at -21dB, set AF out of the receiver to -18dB. The Epic input sliders should be at the bottom. No more amplification is required.

Also : The W00d3n Cam3ra A-box works well for this unit, with the camera's preamp inputs set to balanced.
No phantom power required (obviously).

as Paul Russell advised here:

Thanks!

It sounds like you have the Mix Pre-D set to output a line-level signal. It needs to be set to output mic level. The Epic inputs should NOT be at the bottom, they should be adjusted (using the tone generator in the Mix Pre-D) to match the meter on the mixer which is, if I remember correctly, a setting somewhere in the mid 30s.

In this case, the preamps in the Sennheiser wireless transmitter are doing all the work. No need to use a preamp if you're just hosing the output of a wireless receiver into the camera. One possible reason would be to ride levels, but in truth, you need a sound mixer for that.

@ David Fuller: Thank you, you were right! Your advice helped to solve the problem.
By the way, I was in Portland Maine few yrs ago, such an awesome place. I missed the many and unreal cookies from that bakery next to the Hilton. If you do not know it and you have a change you'll need to try it!

That bakery also makes the best french bread I've ad outside of France. Portland is a wonderful food city!

Because your setup is like mine (Epic-MixPre-D and for me a Neumann 185), I would like to ask if there's any good external recorders that you could use with your MixPre-D. Preferably with timecode and ability to sync with the epic?
