  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC when?

Unfortunately I am recently getting more and more sure about this: 2010 fuggedaboutit- unless you are up for Tattoo, maybe I am wrong - if you asked me back in march I would be 100% sure I got it by now, luckily I have my MX´ed R1!

I really miss Jims appearance on these forums!

A lot of people here are thinking too linearly WRT the tattoo program and then fixes and then production shipments. I would bet that 80% of whatever features have flaws or need fixing are flushed out in the first 3-4 weeks of the program. So Red can start any engineering or software fixes in-line with Tattoo, and not have to wait until it's over. In fact, there is probably a healthy feedback loop between Red and key testers. Where problem arises, fix is sent our for more testing.

So in that optimistic scenario, when Tattoo is finished, all fixes have already been created and validated. Production starts ramping immediately thereafter.

Well, that's one scenario anyway.

The R1 has been really good for me so no matter what happens I really hope you´re right Paul, and I hope RED gets it ready and right soon! The competition has woken up, and is charging from all angles - Arri with their Alexa, they have more cooking be sure of it! the DSLR guys they have improvements going on too. We know Monstro is in the works... It is just too exciting, I hate Jims abscence!

It would be great and I really hope, all possible accesories will be available from stage 2 without to many backorders. I hope that Red orders enough parts and have a healthy reserve on all the things they have in mind and have already in their store, so by the time everybody wants a working system, no to much of delays are introduced to keep everyone happy.

I am actually leaning towards what I posted about a year ago... Epic = Monstro, Scarlet = MX. I hope to be wrong, as I have been many times before...

How time flies! Almost 1 year we were hyped for the Oct 30 announcement. It seems pretty plausible that at least the Epic will cross the finish line for 2010, albeit probably not en masse.

Once the Epic is confidently shipping, can RED own that situation by having all the Automatic Binding Bricks available?

will get happy like a kid if its earlier :)

What about Scarlet 2/3" and Epic-X at the same time? If You're not happy, nobody's happy ;)

I bet You are not wrong at this time :)

Now, THAT would be something! and worth the wait!

There have been prototype Epics shooting since at least early February. The cameras being put into the hands of Soderbergh and others soon will I think be the Tattoos. These would be the final production model Beta prototypes with a complete basic feature set.

I have always said, "end of 2010"... However, I fear that even I may have been a little too optimistic.

Case in point, the Bomb was announced as SHIPPING almost two months ago, and yet barely no one has them.. And this was a SHIPPING announcement.

Along this timeline, if they announced Epics SHIPPING today, the first shipment would not be moving until November.

And we're not talking about one product, we're talking about 30...

I'm not going to change my guess yet, but the person who said NAB 2011 is beginning to sound more convincing every day.. God.. I hope he's wrong.. But I dunno.

Jay

David what is your worse case senario?

Look, nobody knows - that's the answer. if we ignore our confirmation bias - a tendency to interpret the data to support what we want it to say rather than what it might actually suggest.

We know Jim said he intends end of 2010. We know that Jim/RED's statement about scheduling intentions are on average very optimistic. We know tattoos are not out in the sense of the original program statement and no reduser is talking about having one. We know some protos are out. We know its Sept 7th. We know they won't ship a beta camera this go round. We know they had manufacturing challenges in a large way. We know Jim said they are behind schedule multiple times. We know its one of the most challenging engineering projects ever undertaken according to Jim. We know the competitive environment suggests shipping something serious. We know RED has gone silent. We know the schedule is...so far off as to be not worth talking about anymore. We know we are all shooting with the tools we have. We know the HDR mode is interesting. We know that many new accessories (redray, bomb evf, new storage, and on and on) are very delayed. We know that software development is a big issue. We know that ARRI and Canon are not screwing around. We know that RED continues to be the force of nature they have been form the start. We know that....

Umm.....

We know we are shooting with MX's and love them.

BTW Loved the shot at the 1:58 mark on your Summer 2010 reel. (Lots of other great stuff too, but that one made me gasp.)

Maybe, we will have to wait and see. I am certain of one thing though. EPIC is going to be bad ass.

Ha Ha, what Anson said. :iagree:
I'm just the incurable optimist and hopefully the serious schedule delays are behind them.
If they are playing around with new features like HDR, the basic stuff must be pretty solid at this point though.

Yea, Anson's 'We know' summary was pretty dead on :) This is last speculative thread I'm participating in! At least for 2010. :)
