  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic-W Rental Price

In Toronto Canada, the bare bone kit price for a Red Epic Dragon ranges between $600-$750 Canadian dollar.

Guess it depends on the region and demand. Toronto is flooded with Red cameras (but probably not as much as LA). The demand is also tricky as lots here use personally owned Canon and Sony for corporate stuff and many feature and tv use Alexa. Red is big but lots of options for folks. Shooters still use many DSLR for their productions here too (as HD is fine for them).

i think there are few Weapons available but Epic Dragon prices are still high demand. Epic-W would either match price (bumping things down) or be just higher.

My opinion/estimate. No real facts to back it up.

Kansas City might be a different market than LA :) you aren't likely to get 500/day very often for an FS7 in LA. Although 600 for a mini is pretty low unless you are doing a private rental or get a deal from a rental house.

Hah, definitely is! But I travel all over the US and shoot, so I'm not just talking about renting a camera in KC.

I'll be charging a lot more for the Helium package. We'll see how it all shakes out.

Found a posting on sharegrid NYC. Epic-W package including matte box, 3 cards, 4 v-mounts, etc... for $480/d...
The fun part: there is only one other posting for a epic-w package... for $1360/d
Hmmm...

I had a friend add his epic to share grid and it defaulted to a super low price. Kept telling everyone who Called to screw off until he realized it was so low.

Epic-W market is probably going to be very saturated soon. $600/day for 35K-45k of gear does not sound like good investment unless you have continuous rentals and no insurance claims.
How quickly is RED rental equipment normally paid off?

Rental rates should track with purchase price and demand. For a new tech camera like the Epic-W Helium I would ask at least 2% of the cost per day with 3 day weeks. So brain only at $30K would be $600/day. Brain with mags, reader, LCD, batteries, etc that cost $40K new would be $800/day. Etc. Obviously local market conditions may dictate rates with no regard for what the gear costs, but if you can't regularly get 2%/day then perhaps you would be better off as the renter instead of the vendor...

I try to do 3% per day to strangers and will go lower for friends. If the market pushes me to be below 2%, I won't even bother renting it out to strangers no worth the risk. Then the gear is just for me.

What security measures should be taken when renting out a camera. My plan was to rent out my epic-w but as im hearing stories about cameras being stolen by the renters im not so sure anymore. I suppose one option is to only rent out to established production companies or people you know personally...

Get a certificate of insurance from the renter and call the insurance company listed to verify that it is legitimate. If you have your own insurance coverage, call them and ask if it covers theft from someone renting it from you, just as a backup.

The type of insurance that covers you renting your gear to others and them stealing it is called "Volunteer Parting".. Meaning it wasn't stolen, you gave it away and then they stole it... Not covered as traditional theft because of the extra risk, so you need to pay quite a bit more for that.

I have not got any insurance yet but the last one i looked into covered pretty much everything except renting out the camera. In that case i can, as you say, demand the renter has insurance covering all these things. Im also thinking of attaching a small GPS unit somewhere. Thus if they steal it, i will find them and the camera.

Well if the insurance company doesn't offer Volunteer Parting, you can't demand they sell it to you... You should look for an insurance company that does offer it.

Has anyone noticed the difference in rental price for the Epic-W on Borrow lenses and Lensrental.com? It's astonishing to me that on Lens rental the Epic W goes for $968 for three days. The package comes ready to shoot. The Scarlet Dragon is the same price as the Epic-W! Meanwhile the 8k Weapon is going for $1775 for 3 days and Epic Dragon -M is going for $1740. On Lens Rental the Epic-W brain alone is going for $1272 on a 3 day rental. I feel like Lens rental has a more realistic grip on the value of the Epic-W. I understand Borrowlenses has a bigger market share than it's competitors but sheesh their prices are hurting the entire market. it's scary to think that Borrowlenses equates the Epic-W to the Scarlet Dragon. Sorry to vent I'm just in shock.
