  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic W - Keeping Rods Attached - with the Clutch - Help Please!

Hey, everyone.

I'm new to the DSMC2 system - and would love it if someone could lend a helping hand here.

I had spoken to both RED - and Wooden Camera over the phone - and it seems like I may be SOL but...

All I'm trying to do - is create a fast working environment for when I shoot conventions and trade shows; etc. I purchased the Red Clutch with our new Epic W for handheld - but I want my rods to stay attached to my camera - when I do the quick release - so I can quickly go to a 2nd quick release on my tripod (sometimes - I have very little help - and this system has worked great for me on past cameras - though I used to use the Sony Quick release system).

For my rods - I need passthrough rods - because the 15mm lightweights I have now - end at the camera - so for shorter lenses (like my Zeiss ZF.2 cine mods) - I can't attach a follow focus that reaches - without that extra inch (it bumps into the rod holder).

I don't mind going from 15mm lightweight to 15mm studio - I'd just have to buy a different plate for our Bright Tangerine matte box.

I hear this tyoe of quick configuration is possible - but only with 19mm rods? However; the Arri FF1 Follow Focus - doesn't even have a 19mm adapter I can find anywhere - nor do some of the wireless follow focus units I rent.

I thought it would be simple...

Was just looking for a way to keep passthrough rails on the camera - with I disconnect from the Red Clutch - and go to a set of sticks or low profile mode.

Any help would be appreciated!

I think your best bet might be to get a 19mm set up and get a new follow focus.

or go 15mm light weight from Wooden Camera and then put the quick release on that. It will be good for everything you want to do except for when you want to use short lenses.

That's going to be tough. So many rental houses ONLY have 15mm wireless follow focuses for rent. Knocking 3 lenses out of my aresonal (especially for lightweight stuff - gimbal - etc) - hurts a bit. I specifically went with those over the CP.2 for weight reasons... as I have the Schneider Xenon's for cinema stuff. Aaaaagh.

That's EXACTLY what I was looking for!

My only question is... Can I mount the Red Piece to the bottom for their quick release plate... and are the rods too low now...

One trick is to mount the shoulder pad on the little dove tail, then just slide that out when you move to tripod.

Another trick is to top mount some stuff on camera. For example I do this to keep the FF when moving to from the ronin.

Maybe a little off topic, but close. I use Sachtler with touch and go plates, which is great/light when not using rods/FF/matte box and looking for a way to work when I want to add these components and/or a shoulder mount but the only option I found is WC. The issue I have here is I would need to add their riser to the camera and then add on components such as their bridge plate and then the Sachtler plate, even when not needing the more complex setup. Does anyone with DSMC2 use Sachtler, I have a Video 15 SB which I love but any hints would be appreciated.

Craig - I'll let you know how this goes... but it's looking more and more likely - due to height - that I may end up having to go 19mm studio to get a passthrough that's compatible.

This changes my whole eco system... so it's a tough pill to swallow - but I need this to be functional and quick.

I'll let everyone know my findings over the next week...

And if anyone else has some input - please share it here!

I don't know how it fits the RED system, but it looks like what you need.

That Small Rig adapter has a dove tail on the bottom so it probably won't allow for the quick release to be put on that... Otherwise the same option from wooden camera would work. ... as for the arri baseplate, he can't have the rod adapter coming out of the front of the brain because his lenses are too short to line up with his follow focus if that is there.

I wonder if he could mount a dovetail on the quick release and then on top of that use the 15mm studio set up from small rig or wooden camera... it would raise the center of gravity a good amount but probably not too much of a big deal.
 
I'm really Diggin the new Arri Cine plate for RED DSMC2. Love the fact that I can set up a shoulder rig with 15 mm rods in the back and not have the camera really high up. Been looking for a solution like this since I got my camera, super stoked :)

PS and looks like I can use the rosettes with the new GDU cowboy handles

I spoke with RED about this again today - and I can't believe there's no universal bridge plate - with 15mm or 19mm studio rods - that you can mount Red's Quick Release plate onto!!! All those bridgeplates want a dovetail underneath that are 3rd party - and; obviously - that won't work with the clutch... or any of Red's handheld configurations. Wanting your camera to remain built - if you quickly disconnect to cradle a shot that's low profile - or running - then to go back to the shoulder mount rig - is a MUST in my world! Even on the features I've directed.

So - they recommended I do what you do - and have it set up so I can quickly slide the dovetail out of the clutch - to keep the 19mm rods attached - then have dovetail plate ready to go on my tripod.

My question is - how long does it take you to slide the camera out while on a job... And what piece did you buy that's on your sticks for the dovetail to slide into from the clutch?

Last question...

Is it possible to just mount the red connector to a safety dovetail - permanently - on top of the Red Clutch - so I can just slide the camera on and off - using a wooden camera riser and passthrough rod system?

I was thinking of doing this....

Mounting the Red Quick Release into the bottom of this - so it lives on the Red Clutch - http://www.red.com/store/products/dovetail-mounting-plate-short-2

Then - getting this piece from Wooden Camera - http://woodencamera.com/unified-bridgeplate-15mm-studio.html - And just locking this onto the Clutch.

I'd leave an extra, longer safety dovetail - like an 8 Incher - on my tripod.

Just talked to the RED store in Miami... they verified it's very easy to mount an Arri Dovetail on top of the clutch... and it's holes aligned with the mount for the RED quickrelease plate...

So - I think that's what I'm doing.

Going with a Unified Bridgeplate with pass through rods... then just sliding on and off of that.

I know the camera will be a little bit higher - but this has waaay more convienence for me - especially with a 2nd dovetail plate on top of my sticks.

I'll let everyone know how it works out... will probably be next week until I get all the parts.
