  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic vs Scarlet

Love my DSG GTI :)

Or instead of RED intentionally "crippling" Scarlet (sounds so Sony), maybe the Epic just has bigger, better boards. You know, like when you get a Golf vs a Golf GTI. The GTI gets a bigger, better engine. The Golf 2.0 isn't a "crippled" GTI...just has different guts inside that ain't so "Turbo".

I'm not trying to bring up that discussion in this thread, just pointing out that clarity on the sensor readout question could help resolve it. Who wants 5k/24p if it takes nearly an entire frame just to get from the top to the bottom of the sensor? Car manufacturers certainly limit performance in various ways to avoid going over subjective thresholds (mechanical tolerance, MPG, etc.), and the limit in our case would be acceptable amounts of r/s. So of course Scarlet's boards are less powerful than Epic's, the unanswered question is 'by how much?'

How fast the Scarlet's processors are clocked has absolutely nothing to do with the read reset time of the sensor.

It's sad how RED never chimed in on this, I wouldn't mind to stand corrected.

After all, they should know for sure. But to my knowledge, they only said it's the same sensor. They never denied or confirmed more RS on the Scarlet. Maybe it is a dark little secret.
Anyway, it's a great camera, I don't know another one to date with the same capabilities and price and less RS.

To me it's very much crippled as it does not have any format that is full 5k width in 24/25p... thats something that the camera should be able to do, even if it was less than 2.1 in aspect ratio. Also I think it's crippled since it can not record a anamorphic frame even in 4k, even if it maybe can not display a squeezed image, it for sure should be able to record in a 1:1 format. If scarlet was the top dog from RED then for sure they would would make it happen. So as I see it you guys have to get used to the the idea that the scarlet is a basically a way for RED to cover a larger patch of the camera market, it's intended to be as potential as it can be, not at this date, but maybe RED will change their mind when the competition catch up. Still for the money which it's available for it's not a bad horse to bet on.

I kind of agree with Bjorn; Scarlet is very much a stymied camera (compared to Epic) particularly in regards to the lack of ANA and WS modes across its resolution range (I'm not even talking about 4.5k, but everything else). I,m not saying its intentional, just that logic suggests WS modes should be easier to churn through (as indicated by the max frame rate increase) while still using "essentially the same" amount of the sensor and with less SSD space. For a company that prides itself on being transparent with its customers and squeezing out every drop of performance, it's kind of frustrating that they haven't discussed it (they seem to ignore it altogether)... I know it wasn't promised, but did they ever explicitly indicate that scarlet wouldn't be getting WS or ANA, and if so, WHY it wouldn't?

That said, until the F5 hits the streets, there really isn't anything else out there that does what Scarlet does in this price range. So, to be fair, it's still in its own league I just personally dislike the lack of clarity/transparency on these few things that would open up a whole new gear for Scarlet.

I'm sure many will agree that a solid working camera with the specs that were initially promised is a billion times more valuable than constantly adding new features for the sales brochure. The Scarlet has proven to be a workhorse in any production environment. They jam packed the latest firmware release and naturally there are a few bugs to squish. Even if new frame rates and resolutions are ready to go in the wings, it doesn't make much sense to include it with this release as it would intro too many variables in isolating problems. I would expect (if indeed there are these new features being worked on) to be released on there own.
