Epic vs 5D3 Raw Side by Side

The BMCC is 2.5K @RAW.

The MFT mount option is however not shipping. It was a very sneaky post adding that qualifier. Especially when comparing it to the EF mount 5D. But given that it is the 5D we are comparing to the EF mount is a perfectly acceptable version of the BMCC to choose.

The reality is that when you look at these photos side by side (in 1080), there is absolutely no discernible difference, image wise. Yes the ergonomics are different, the Epic can shoot high speeds, the "motion" on the RED may look more filmic, 4K is future proof, yada yada, but really, in 1080 24p I see absolutely no difference.

I am a RED Scarlet and 5D3 owner. If I'm only concerned with final image quality, someone tell me why it's worth spending $30k+ more on an Epic when I can get the exact same image on a 5D3?

Mike

to answer the original poster - I sense you feel your scarlet investment threatened by the 5draw. You shouldn't, or well, at least wait for some serious side by side tests, not some jpeg pics on a blog.

i am sucker for RAW, if a camera does it it, its awesome. there are many a times producers don't have budget for a good camera. Here in the region where I film, it mostly issue with permissions etc. a discrete camera like a 5D M3 that can get me some RAW goodness at 1080p deliverable is an awesome proposition. What i am concerned about is the stability and reliability of magic lantern.

Need to try it out, looks like a awesome "spy kit" that takes RAW video :-)

Did you rally work with both Scarlett and 5D ?
I always carry both and use the same optics on them and you know what ? I never, NEVER use the 5D if i can go Red. I don't understand this thread. Seems totally obvious for me. If it is not the same for you, of course, go the 5D mark III !

If the factor of comparison is resolution, this lens choice is not a beneficial one.

Yes, that part is understandable. Can you be more specific in the context of my prior post ?

That 4K example is introducing upscaling variable into the comparison, btw.

For me I found a couple of stand outs. Firstly the ability, at 1080, to punch in dramatically and still have crisp clean sharp shots is amazing. Of course at 4k you couldn't go that far but there's still some wiggle room. Secondly working with raw is truly a dream. Being able to change, push and pull the footage is outstanding. I could never do that, at least to the degree I can now, with any other format. Thirdly, I find that shooting video with a DSLR to be a painful experience, due mostly because it was designed to take stills. I struggle with the ergonomics of the cameras when trying to shoot video. I do use mine for B Cam stuff and it matches ok, no one will ever know.

I wish many of you could go back 20 years and not only see what options/choices you had for pro cameras but also the prices. Today's cameras/prices are both amazing and cheap. So pick one and go with it. My choice is Red.

please close this stupid thread...

Kemalettin, The only thing stupid about this thread are pointless comments like yours that don't put forth any substantial thoughts. You don't need to emotional about this my man.

i dont understand why you act like troll..Its already 8 pages and people trying to say why you need Red then if 5D mk 3 so good for you.i own 5D mk3 too and i like the images from it but its funny to compare to Pro. Digital Cinema camera..

The upscaling variable is unavoidable when you upscale.

These images do not allow objective comparison of resolution because in this frame grab Epic's 5K sensor is not sampling detail of the scene as it is capable of, but lens limitations,
with potential motion blur of foliage which is dominant in the shot. These images also do not allow the objective comparison of DR because scene's range is lower than DR of both cameras.

With better lens choice the resolution difference would be more noticeable even in HD, with much clearer looking 1080p. If that was the main premise.
Without the need of upscaling 5D and sharpening Epic's image, which does not introduce detail which isn't captured but merely enhances micro contrast.

All has been said, I guess (had no time to wade through the whole thread) but to answer your initial question:

No. For 1080p don't bother about an Epic and the extra 30k unless you need:

1. PL-mount

2. higher frame rates

3. Better form factor (HDSLRS for filmmaking are even more cumbersome than Red cameras)

4. Bigger frame size for optional re-sizing

I also think, but I haven't eyeballed it yet, that the OLPF of the Canon DSLR is a tad too sharp for filming brick walls and similar challenging environments.

Not really sure why you're calling me a troll. If anything, you're coming off as a bit of a RED fanboy. As I stated in my original post, I own a Scarlet and a 5D3. I use both regularly, and for all the reasons stated above, I much prefer using my RED. That said, I don't think anyone can deny that this comparison shows that the images coming off the hacked 5D3 look pretty damn similar to the RED. And if one is only concerned with final image quality, I do find it a bit disconcerting that a RED costs 10x more.

Opinions are like a#*holes, everybody has one.

IMPO, there have been clear answers to the original post that are based more on talent, expertise and technical merit than yet another "X is better than RED post". Unless you have your own hands-on experience with your own kit and the lenses you wish to use for the parameters of the project you are prepping for, then all of this is conjecture based on rumor and innuendo.

Often, it is a good idea not to put too much faith in what you see posted online..it is just an opinion based on an agenda that may or may not match your own.

Personally, we choose to shoot on all the cameras listed in this post and the iphone and the Sony F65 and ALL of these cameras have their place in any working film maker's arsenal of story telling tools.

It really just depends on budget, final output and ease of use vs. image quality.
