Epic STREAK FLARING

Jean,

Do you really want to do that? Do you want to risk ending up with a problem, sending the camera in for repair and hearing "sorry your warranty has been violated"?

Not I said the cat.

Oh it better be sooner than that!

It sounds like a relatively easy fix.

I would think so. Unless it's brain dead simple and we're not risking warranty, I don't want to mess with it.

I don't like being without a camera, but I don't want to fuck it up either ;)

M

there is no voiding of the warranty involved, but if you f*** up your sensor or OLPF, you will be paying for it. common sense sensors are maybe $8k replacement...? OLPF much less to worry about, just a hassle.

I am a little puzzled why, with the excessive streaking issue out there and obviously in need of a fix, we aren't hearing more from RED other than to give Doug Underdahl permission to create a short-term fix. As Mark P. notes and the detailed laser tests confirm, this appears to be an unexpected design issue that, ultimately, can only be corrected there at RED.

I am curious how the big-boys are handling the issue on their shoots.

I'm also wondering why hasn't anyone mentioned this earlier as the streaking appears to be quite easy to run into during regular shooting. Surely people who've been shooting hundreds of hours of footage for major motion pictures and other stuff have noticed this, so why did it take this long to come out on the forum?

Lucky for me my serial number is so far back in the queue; RED might have a fix for the streaking by the time my number comes up in Stage 3.5...

The OLPF is designed to be user/field replaceable, is it not? There's supposed to be a version with ND built in to lower your effective ISO. So could one not remove it and flock both "lips" on the front and back side?

All quiet on the Red front. I'm sure that Red has their hands full with the EPIC X production but this is a serious problem and I don't think they want to have to do work on a bunch of cameras they just shipped out. So Red, what is the status on this issue? Any fix coming down the pipe?
