  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic STREAK FLARING

I used an old red made in China laser pointer (Aurora brand, 645nm). I measured its output at a lab a few years ago and as I recall it was about 3.8mw. The label specs it at <5mw. Checked my Epic sensor and it is fine, as expected. It takes a fairly powerful laser and/or long exposure time to damage a CCD or CMOS sensor. Likely a stage lightshow laser or one of the high powered green lasers damaged Eirik's chip. Whatever the situation, lasers can be dangerous and are not playthings. YRMV, and be careful out there...

@Douglas

I was thinking that putting an adhesive tape in there might not be a great long term solution. I imagine the inside of that mount gets pretty hot (this is why they went with titanium right) so a glue or adhesive might get messy with heat.

Are you suggesting now that there might be a black metal mod piece like you did for the ARRI IIC, that could be put in place to "flag" those areas inside the sensor to prevent these types of flares.

That could work well.

Guys... RED needs to fix this! Don't mess your cameras up!

First day out with an EPIC M! Love the camera. Perfect for what we were shooting. BUT first shot, shooting kids on a 100 year old mint condition carousel with small light bulbs in the background... and sure enough.... streak flaring!

I will post photos later. Another day of shooting tomorrow.

Stoked that Epic-X is now in production and shipping is starting, just wanted some idea of whether this issue has been fixed?

Clearly not a deal breaker, as it obviously hasn't stopped major feature films shooting, but seems like it could involve removing the OLPF, so not a DIY fixable job?

it is totally self fixable for now if it is a major issue to your shooting, i'd say use matte black tape over the area in question, and be EXTREMELY careful around the internal parts, as always. don't use anything that leaves a residue. there is still no official recommendation or response from red on a long term fix, but we have permission to take necessary measures (with precaution) to mask off the offense temporarily. douglas may still be working on an item, and i assume red engineers are still looking into a good permanent solution themselves.

I do feel that this is likely to be an issue down the road for a lot of people, so I'm hoping that RED is looking into changing the materials involved so as to not have to deal with it later (as happened with the audio system on the RED One).

Couple of steps ahead, Paul. I've done all that.
As mentioned earlier, part of the problem is coming from behind the OLPF glass.

i was just trying to summarize for those asking questions, my understanding is that red would need to use a different material around the OLPF, but we'll see what they come up with.

I can't make it out to Doug's until after next week. He's only an hour or so outside NYC, so maybe someone else in the area can get there sooner?

If not, I'm planning to swing by anyway, just not as soon as I'd hoped to.

mmm... any news, Deanan?...

... A change of materials for that OLPF mount could help considerably, even without changing the design...

After my first two day of shooting EPIC, I have to say I LOVE the camera and the images are stunning. But this is something that needs to be fixed.

We consistently encountered the problem and could easily produce the streak flares and honestly, it was a pain in the ass. Especially since in some scenes we were shooting into sources with the intent of creating aesthetic lens flaring. But we did NOT want the very distinct and "unmotivated"vertical streak flares that are caused by light bouncing off the OLPF mount or some other internal component.

So, yeah, I hope RED will respond soon to this thread and tell us what is going on. Deanan weighed in and said they could re-create the situation and the optical techs were looking into it, so what's the outcome? If RED officially acknowledge the problem, then please let us know. Tell us you are working on it and will have a fix down the road. But please don't encourage users to come up with home grown solutions (as if that's OK).

I'm sure if any of us tried to fix this problem that our warranties would be violated. I for one don't want to start messing around in the sensor plane... So please let us know what is being done about it. That would make us feel a lot better. I think we can all deal with it in the interim, knowing that a fix is on the way.

So I hope we soon hear about a plan to offer a camera update... similar to some of the early fixes on the RED ONE.

Thanks guys!

M
