Hey folks! As promised in the FMJ thread, here's the first of a bunch of upcoming product announcements! This is the first accessory to follow the FMJ cage.
The Epic Stealth Plate is exactly what it looks and sounds like - a stealthy little cheese plate that fits on the right side of the camera. It uses the same interface as the DSMC Side Handle to attach to the camera which means that it's very quick to attach and detach when needed.
The plate has 1/4-20 and 3/8-16 holes in RED spacing so that any standard RED accessory will fit. I've been using my prototype for a few days and have found that it's super handy to attach a monitor on an arm, a SWAT rail or one of a few more surprises that are coming down the pipe. You can even screw in an ET V-Dock or similar quick release mechanism which gives you a very handy way to attach accessory mounting plates, distribution amplifiers or downconverters, timecode boxes… you name it. Want a focus hook? Just stick a screw into the plate and hook your tape measure on it! You won't believe how useful it is to have a cheese plate this stealthy and flush to the body.
One of the greatest things about it is how quickly you can remove it. When you remove the side handle from your Epic you have to screw a little blanking plate that comes with the camera body on there to protect the sensitive connections below. The stock blanking plate has a tiny little screw that loves to escape when you remove it too - gotta watch out for it.
So instead of using the blanking plate that came with the camera, you just replace it with the Stealth Plate. The screw is captured too, so there's no risk of losing it. The back side of the Stealth has all of the same dimensions as the RED blanking plate and DSMC Side Handle, so your connections and interface are safe. Just hook it on, screw it in and you're in business!
I put the Stealth Plate right up there with the FMJ-Top in terms of killer usability in an "invisible" product. The plate simply feels like an extension of the camera body - you'll never know it's there.
I'm anticipating a $250 price with availability in the next week or so. Stay tuned! Hope you guys like it.
Here's a picture of my camera with the non-coated prototype attached. Apologies again for the terrible phone picture! I have an anodized one now and it is SO cool looking.
