  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC STAGE Clarification and update

You guys do realize that RED charges for every single MX upgrade that goes into a camera right? There's a cash flow to the tune of multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars a week going into RED just in upgrades ... And don't forget the Stage 2 deposits and upcoming payments when deliveries start happening. How 'bout the pent up demand for $3000 evfs that's just about ready to let go?

Brilliant. Oakley was not accidental.

I'd be an ideal candidate for an MX'd RED One at this point, but with no product to buy, I can't. I wonder how many other people are in the same boat as me.....

P.s. Renting is not an option for me. I own all my gear and use most of it for short burst each day. I'm an owner, not a renter -- exactly RED's market.
Martin Weiss has started a thread of owners of probably well-kept cameras that are ready to be MX-ed and Ketch Rossi also has a thread. If you are one who will only buy new, then you'll just have to wait. If you are willing to own "like-new" or used, then there are options for you.

And don't forget that when you send it in for the upgrade they do a full Inbound Quality Control diagnostics of the camera. Even include a 90-day warranty on the sensor which is the most expensive part to replace. If you need to buy MX now there is no reason not to buy used.

New? Stage clarification - dates

New? Stage clarification - dates

Delays with Epic: does this mean that there will be a new Stage (with dates) UPDATE? In fact, this now changes a lot of things, so what about opening up stage 2 again now that Epic is on delay? I know i held out with my second camera because I knew i could get by with one MX camera for a few months. Now with Mr. Jannard's announcement about the delay of epic, that puts me (i'll assume others) on the fence with a need for 2nd camera. Knowing this, i'd have gladly opted for stage 2 on second camera. At any rate, do we have any new dates of deadlines stretched for other stages?

My $100 hard drive comes with 2 year warrant. A $23K camera comes with a 90 Days of Warranty? A new camera comes with a warranty longer than 90 days and i don't have to caught up with 'ownership' problems.

Interesting "logic", if that's the right term.

Valid point about a new warranty.

But you may not realize that one of the best parts of being a RED camera owner, IMO, is being treated as a valued customer even after the sale. That is why existing customers get the MX upgrade before new owners can.

I don't think that there's a huge inventory of MX sensor upgrades just laying around.

Yeah, but the price difference for a used camera should more than make up for the tranfer of ownership fees and any repairs you may need for that first year.

I had my camera for over two years and never had to send it in for repair.

i would suggest it boils down to how long you want to wait for an MX camera. if you want it NOW and don't want nor can't wait around for you new M camera and then wait in the queue for the MX upgrade---how long is it now from start to finish to buy an NEW RED ONE and get MX upgrade? 7 days? 14 days? one month? 3 months? Does anybody know?

....seems to me if you want an MX camera this month, you have to buy one used yes?

Possibly more RED One sales could be made if the news units would ship with the M-X sensor as option. The staging system/EPIC is completely appropriate to the early adopters, no disprespect. But I wonder if consideration could still be made sell RED Ones MX'd concurrently with the MX upgrade program.

Would that idea be too offensive?

Yes, RED would make more sales. This just underscores how Jim Jannard will forego profit to remain true to the custormers who believed in him. Being a Red customer is like having a one on one relationship with the founder. May not be popular in the short term, but in the long term people will want to do business with a quality company because they know they will not sacrifice quality over profits in the future. This is not BP or Toyota... customers come first over profits it seems.

edit: to be more clear, I think that people who rent their cameras are the ones who would be adversely affected and I think RED seems to appreciate this.

That's just my view of things. I do not speak for RED Digital Cinema... whatever.

You don't understand Renting business. When you are renting equipment to others, you are not just renting one piece of equipment. You are renting a service, knowledge of camera systems, and support service. I don't think a sensor upgrade will turn your business profits 180 Degrees.

People think buying a Mac Pro and FCP will make them a 'player' in post production industry. No it will not.

Its the SERVICE, stupid.

(no offense, of course)

well then maybe im the exception to the rule, because my rentals have significantly gone up since Mysterium X..

more rentals or calls for rentals since i got my MX than all of last year combined

There are many single camera owners who rent out their cameras, sometimes with their services included. The MX adds value.

Exactly, dim light bulb. (no offense, of course)

Do not buy RED now????

Do not buy RED now????

No upgrade path for today buy means = Do not buy RED now???

The alternative is to buy a lesser camera (also with no upgrade path). The upgrade path was for people who risked capital for a long time to buy a camera that was not even in existence. The camera is now in existence. There are many who have testified that it is a great camera.

An even greater one is just around the corner if you want to wait.

Of course if you are talking about an upgrade path for a new camera to the MX sensor, there is one but it is not an immediate one.

Question for Jim,

Do you think ARRI's Alexa would be here today if you didnt start this company?

Others can share their minds too.

Ding! exactly. The RED ONE is an incredible working Camera, magically enhanced with the next generation M-X Chip, today. Workflows are awesome and improving and clients are requesting RED (and some 7D B-roll) more and more. The key word here being "more" lately.

Life is good!
