  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC Stage 3

Me too. I have a feature that is being pushed back so we can shoot on Epic.

I too would like to know, I've been on several threads inquiring this, and now I think Red is getting a little bit tired of the question! :P

If I had to guess ... I don't think they will announce it until they feel confident about being on schedule and totally on top of the Stage 2 orders. Stage 2 will take them through April/May at least, from what has been tentatively posted here before. Subject to change, of course. So another guess ... probably best case scenario is a Stage 3 announcement sometime around NAB or after in May sometime ... and if you are a low serial number, the possibility of getting your Epic in June or so.

(Please don't crucify me, I said this was a GUESS. We are speculating here and everything is subject to change.)

Also, keep in mind that Stage 3 will be pretty big because there are a lot of people eligible and it's such an amazing deal. So if you have a later serial number you will be further back in line :(

But hopefully by then Red's production will be ramped up enough to where there won't be a huge difference in time between an early Stage 3 and a later Stage 3 buyer.

Not sure if that helps ....

I was just putting my "me too" in not as a complaint, but rather a expression of my anticipation.

I totally appreciate the incredible technical challenges faced by RED. The fact that since the Stages were announced Jim and Team RED have decided to give me a better camera than I thought I was getting, makes the wait more challenging, only because I want it more than ever.

But I think I know what you're saying, and yes, let's refrain from starting a gripe session, and be constructive.

I think all the Epix-M customers will be fulfilled before Epic-X. Once the mass production line sets up they should be pumping out some good numbers. Plus, since they are being made in the USA I would think that will cut out some time since they don't have to be shipped back to RED from Asia.

The forum has been kinda quiet the last week or so..maybe the calm before the storm?

Yah but Epic-M is a hand-built machined process happening in the meanwhile, as far as I know the process has ZERO effect on the production of Epic-X ... neither do the Epic-M orders. Red admits it has been surprised by the interest, but there's no definite # of places or orders for the Epic-M that affect timing of production on any other camera.

Initially, my understanding was they are only taking the # of M orders they can comfortably fulfill until larger scale production is ready (since there's a big price difference and no real advantage over M over X, except prestige and getting it early) ... yet now Jim has said they will likely keep making them in small numbers even after regular Epics are shipped. Either way, a hand-built limited-edition version of the camera will have no effect on the stages.

I think for the most part the M seris has been a way to get cameras out into the wild an in the hands of amazing testers/early adopters like Mark, Gibby, Ketch, etc and judging from what we've seen so far (and what's coming) I think it was a brilliant move on Red's part.

Even though I won't get one, I couldn't be happier they are doing the M ... yet I hope development of the regular production is coming along as well :)

Just a word of encouragement that stage 3 is going ahead as planned from Red would be great to hear.
This long silence is worrying. Especially every time I see "everything is subject to change" signature line. :(

I'm guessing August for stage three.

Yeah I think you're right Anthony. i think we will see a good number of EPIC-Ms come before any EPIC-Xs though. either way I don't think we will hear much about X until they have a bunch ready. Most of the guys in the first stages will probably get theirs together.

Truthfully, I want my Epic to be machined, at one point they all were going to be, so I recall. Wish there was some way it could be cost-effective enough to make it so. Epic to be machined, Scarlet to be cast, that's my thought.

I don't think they will say anything about stage 3 until stage 2 is well underway.

Basically, when stage 2 starts, figure you have maybe 3 months before hearing much about stage 3.

So watch for stage 2 as that will trigger movement.

I must say i'd like to know what the plans are for stage 3 but i think it's best to wait until stage 2 has happened or else it will probably change by the time stage 3 is ready.

According to Jim, those of us who have never owned a RED should get our Epics by the end of summer. So that would put stage 3 before August.

Everything is subject to change

I think Red will be asking for deposits around the time the stage 2s start shipping. They need to know what they are dealing with in terms of production. It won't be long now, a few months at most.*

*all of the above is based on conjecture and opinion and could be complete B.S.
