  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC / SCARLET Firmware 3.3

Just to be correct, it's 120fps @ 1kWS (1280*480) and 89fps @ 1kHD (1280*720).

While the bank holds me back from buying the Epic, frame rates hold me back from buying the Scarlet. Such a shame that they aren't looking to upgrade the frame rates.

Argue with the Bank a bit more

This update is amazing. Still waiting on different recording frames for Scarlet, however. 2:1, 2.35:1.... where are ye!?

Stuart, the SCARLET OpsGuide mentions 2K WS and 5K WS options plus some ... probably it's just a copy/paste error from the EPIC Ops Guide, but I wanted to ask anyway: Should that be enabled ?
Or is that coming up?

Stuart, the SCARLET OpsGuide mentions 2K WS and 5K WS plus some ... just as for the EPIC. Should that be enabled ? Or will it ever ;) please help us out here!
I see only two reasons for that, RED want's to tease us or it's just a copy/paste-error. ;)

Not a shame at all - means that we who bought Epics can amortize our investments. Not all of us are hobbyists here, some of us make a living renting our gear to our own productions and to others.

What makes you think that I'm a hobbyist? Oh I see, because I can't afford an Epic, I get it now. Thanks for pointing that out.

Posts like this are all to common on this forum. People with inferiority complexes talking about how they are better because of x, y and z. From my experience, I've found that the people who are genuinely good at what they do don't shout about it.

So are you saying that the Scarlet would be as good as the Epic if it had 120fps at 2k?? Not really huh?

+1 for Patrick

High fps are overrated but for the occasions where these are useful I'd of course would still love to have the choice ... Like at 2K ;) but even more important to me is 5K @ 24 or even 25 fps.

Edit: not that I don't like high fps. High fps is awesome .... I love it ..... If used wisely ( like everything else)

I'm fairly certain 5k (unless WS or ANA mode) is not possible. I would love to see 4.5k WS on Scarlet though and I think it falls within the megapixels per frame of 4k (which is why it was possible on the R1.)

Has there ever been any word on 4.5k WS on Scarlet? Why/why not?

Why on earth would they? Doing so would eat into Epic sales....

So you would buy a Scarlet instead of an Epic if it shot 120fps @ 2k?

See I look at it as RED eating into their own ethos. They are spearheading the whole super high res imaging system, and yet they put a 1k function on their newest camera. Strange.

I don't think think it would eat into Epic sales, however I do think it would increase Scarlet sales, starting with me.

Great update, very fast lcd response and very quick fool proof update.
No sign of the elusive anamorphic mode for scarlet??? Can we expect this in the future or am I going to be renting an Epic?

How do you mean James?

A LOOK applied just to the HD-SDI and not the other outputs, or the LOOK applies to the HD-SDI and the other outputs?

Sorry for not being clear Stuart. I would like to see some presets from RED that would emulate certain looks, ie C-log, S-Log,etc. I could bake these in for monitoring, also to go to an external recorder for those who do not want 4K at this time. It would allow myself to give them certain looks on set very quickly and be consistant with other RED cameras as well as other manufactures.
Putting these looks to export out in HDMI, SDI and on board camera monitoring might be very cool.
Thanks.
Jim

I was not directing my comment at you specifically. Sorry if it seemed that way. Also, for the last time, I have NEVER implied that owning any kind fo gear makes you more talented. I have only said that if there is no longer a way to amortize a larger investment, then I and others will stop making those investments, and it will eb pretty hard for the fine folks at Red to finance R&D without flagship-line customers who pay top dollar and almost never call tech support. I expect to get a higher $$ return on my higher $$ Epic investment in terms of rentals to my own prods and to those of others than people who spent less $$ and bought a Scarlet. It's just business. It has nothing to do with talent or status or anything like that. That's what I meant by "I am not a hobbiest". Renting out my gear is part of my livelihood. I didn't buy it just to shoot some personal opus.

Sorry if you have a problem with that.
