  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC / SCARLET Firmware 3.3

SDI Audio and Sony

SDI Audio and Sony

Great new build!

For some reason, my Sony PVM-1741 and PVM-740 will not detect audio in the SDI stream when coming directly from the Epic. Same behavior on 3.2.19. However, if I loop the Epic through a KiPro Mini, the audio shows up fine at the Sonys. Tried all the various SDI output settings, and the Sonys don't have any trouble with the camera's progressive picture output, just audio. The KiPro must be making the signal more Sony friendly. Anyone else have this problem? Weird.

Sean, nice job on the video, this could be your demo reel for the next film competeing with Tom Cruise !!!

Our vote is more videos as it shows the enthusiasm and connection to us!

THANK YOU!

Yeah Kennan!
Hope you and Karen are doing great out in the wild!

Sean as in Ruggeri :) but Sean Mchugh was in the room as we shot this. I knew I had to move fast on this one as there was so much to cover in this progressive build and I wanted to say a lot in a small amount of time. But I promise to slow down my cadence in the future, if/when the content allows for it...

Hehehe. Hi Sean. Great seeing you! So Sean was in the room you say? I hope it wasn't the purple tights he was wearing ;)
and don't worry about the speed. It actually felt good. To let the info sink in I had to watch it twice and pause it once to look at the menu shown at the moment. But since one can always do that, I don't have the feeling a slower speed or cut is needed. Keeps a great pace like that ;) great job, again!!!

I had a little bug on a shoot tonight. Only once, after shooting a clip I went to playback mode and the clip showed the first frame as always but wouldn't play back and I couldn't leave play back mode. I pressed the power button to restart the camera and it got stuck in the shutting down screen. Had to remove the battery. After restart tried with the same clip and the same happened. Tried a new clip and it worked fine after that...

Happy if you nailed the black and white at startup. Had that happen all the time yesterday...

Looks like a great build.
Will download and use it tomorrow morning.

Thanks guys!

Just watched the video guys, thank you. Keep'em coming.
Cold you do some SDI out "looks" next? This would really help with me selling this camera to producers who want to shoot with the Alexa
at 1080.

After an initial error (RED Support contacted), I'm happy to report that the update to my Scarlet has gone well and is currently black-shading fine too.

As others have mentioned, the LCD now seems to be much more responsive than the previous build, the soft keys functionality is brilliant - being able to apply looks from the soft keys, whilst in playback mode is really sweet. The video is a great help too!

I've still to try out the EVF, but I'm extremly happy with this. I feel like I could spend a week just setting up presets.

Thank you RED Team!

Just a small feedback: until now my Scarlet works flawlessly with the update.
I installed the update a couple hours ago and played around with it for a while. No problems so far. Works fine!

Can anyone tell me what the max frame rate is on the Scarlet and at what resolution. The store page still says 120fps @ 1k, but I heard that new firmware makes 120 @ 2k. Correct?

Still 1k. Doubt very much that will change.

Same here, no problems so far and the white-screens are finally gone. Great work guys.

Great build. Soft keys are excellent.

That said, I can't seem to find the user key function that allowed the LCD to toggle between clean, "full-screen", timecode only, etc. I'd love that added back in the next build... and it'd be even better if the toggle sequence could include the new "Enable Look Around" feature currently only accessible through SETTINGS>SETUP>SYSTEM>RECORDING.

It would also be great to flop the monitor, and see accurate battery percentages (currently only "time remaining" is accurate).

Anyway... great work guys. Terrific stuff.

Could you do some SDI out "looks" next? This would really help with me selling this camera to producers who want to shoot with the Alexa at 1080.

How do you mean James?

A LOOK applied just to the HD-SDI and not the other outputs, or the LOOK applies to the HD-SDI and the other outputs?

No, great question. I hope it's something that simple. I am no longer finding a check box for "Audio Record Enable". Just the Settings/AudioVideo/Audio Channels where 1/2 are set to Cam Analog. No "Link" boxes are checked.

In the Settings/AudioVideo/Audio Control panel with 4 tabs, I click on the Volume Out tab and both Cam channels say Active. I look at another tab, go back to the Volume Out and both say Mute. Without changing anything I look at some other menus, come back to Volume Out tab and one says Mute, the other Active. They keep changing. But all four channels remain grey on the screen.

Can you send us a LOG file from your camera please Sean?

With regard to the check box for Audio Record, that was removed from the UI in this build. Audio record is now enabled by selection of an input type - so for example if Ch 1/2 says NONE then record is disabled too, but when Ch 1/2 has an input type selection, audio record is automatically enabled.

So something isn't right on you camera, the LOG file will help us understand the issue.

There is a key action "LCD (Brain): Cycle Mode" that will cycle through the different modes - is that what you need?

and it'd be even better if the toggle sequence could include the new "Enable Look Around" feature currently only accessible through SETTINGS>SETUP>SYSTEM>RECORDING.

You can create a preset that enables/disables look around. The preset parameter is "System:Look Around Enabled". See the post Map a Key to Toggle or Cycle Through Different Settings for an example of how to make a key toggle a camera setting using presets.

I believe he means, he's shoots in C-log but you have the option to send out a REC709 signal to your HD-SDI with the ALEXA, while he can still monitor on his EVF C-log.

The ability to pump a specific look to the HDSDI separate from what is sent to the EVF would be handy. If I adjust the black levels when using the OLED EVF, it unfortunately gets pumped out the SDI and onto my Samurai which is not what I want.
