We have a full matched set of the new Leica lenses at 3ality Digital for the next few days and have mounted them on EPICs with our TS-5 rigs.

Over the next few days, I'll be posting some stills and (hopefully) R3Ds of LE/RE off the rigs...

People here are pretty psyched about the combination!

Lucas

Great Lucas!!!

Looking forward to read more about it...also get some of R3Ds shot on EPIC-M with Leica-Summilux-C finally!!!

Those 3D rigs are kind of intimidating. Why are the cameras upside down?

Nice!!!!! Sooooooo jealous and can't wait to see stills ......

It's a beamsplitter rig. The camera pointing up is getting a mirror reflection of the target image... which matches the image alignment going straight through the mirror into the other camera.

Technically, the camera isn't upside down, the rig is. But that's sort of neither here nor there. The TS-5 in this configuration because:

1) it's *much* easier to balance
2) Because of balance, it's the best way to use a rig in handheld or steadicam mode.
3) The mirror pointing down helps a lot with ambient reflections & other optical aberrations.
4) This configuration is much easier on camera crew and talent for maintaining eyeline.

Best,

Lucas

Thanks for explaining this Lucas. You rock, and you never know exactly what other people know ... so breaking it down like this is I'm sure very helpful to others here reading on the forum.

Really cool Lucas :-)

Lucas

Should have told me about this today when you were on set.

Peter

Hey Peter - I'll give you a shout tomorrow. Some other really cool stuff going on we need to talk about! Sorry for not mentioning it - to be honest, it was not on my brain in the 30 seconds that I saw you. :)

So how sharp are those Leicas??

Well... our friends over at Otto Nemenz were kind enough to supply these lenses, and here is what Ryan from Otto had to say in an email discussion I had with him... (posted with his permission)

"It's extraordinary to finally put 5K+ lens on 5k cameras on a TS-5 system. It's the ultimate combination of creative precision and speed.

These lenses are so sharp and distortion free, they may just bridge the gap between the 2/3" "everything in focus" and the 35mm "look and feel" 3D camps. "

We will be providing R3Ds soon... with NAB prep for those of us on the manufacturing and product side, things are a bit nuts.

Best,

Lucas
