  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-S...

What's the highest redcode that can be captured on CFs equivalent to? 10:1? I'd think anything higher than that would be gravy for most S users as it's probably the most accessible format for first time users... That is to say, it's essentially included in the $12-13k price.

Conversely, I think a lot of S users are going to opt for a Canon mount since the glass is much easier/cheaper to come by... plus point-to-point, auto-racking auto-focus... but I digress.

Jim, you are insane. 60fps 5k?! Mahhaha.... that is too much! :) But I'll gladly take it!! Thanks!

What would be included in the 12-13k estimated price aside from the body?

Very glad to see an Epic-S update.

I think the projected price of this thing is awesome. Much higher price/performance ratio than other motion cameras in its price range PLUS it replaces my still camera! What a freakin' deal!

When can we expect final specs & pricing?

I'm pretty sure that's just the brain Roberto. Like you said, 5k at 60fps is amazing at any price - but $12-13k is unreal and puts it
in the same range as the Sony F3 (brain). Hmmm - 5k at 60fps or 1080p at 60fps ... which one will I choose???? ;)

Both! We'll likely rent one of each. 60fps 5k means you can shoot up to about 30fps HDRx on Epic-S. Great place to be.

I think the biggie and pretty much the only thing to consider when buying is upgrade-ability. Sure, slow motion factors in a great deal for certain people, but Epic-S will be an insane beast of a machine! And sure, some clueless people will frown upon the lesser Epic without really knowing what they are talking about, but with specs like this, they are bound to be VERY few and far between. You can do anything you want with an Epic-S! Just make sure you ROI and save up for the next before Dragon hits the road, and you are good to go.

I just hope that technology doesn't move too fast and 8K becomes the standard too soon.

Ideally, I would be nice if the EPIC-S could last at least 5 years as a modern camera.

Looking at the speed in which the other guys are moving, I'd say it will.

Hey Roberto - when I said "5k at 60 fps or 1080p at 60fps" - I was referring to the difference between Epic-S and Sony F3 ... considering they will be about the same price for the brain. It was rhetorical (albeit unclear) ... :)

...you even have to use external recording to get 60fps @ 1080 with the F3!!! otherwise your only getting it at 720p with the sxs on board recording

I hiiiighly highly doubt 8k will be the standard in less then 5 years (but ive been known to be wrong before) most local theaters dont even use 4k projectors yet. I think you go9t some time :)

I'll put my money on 4K projection being standard for the next 10 years. Look how long 35mm lasted. We might see higher for Imax/3D/whatever, but 4k will last a while. I say it'll be another 5 years till the big boys catch up and have 4k acquisition in their flagship and prosumer lines. By then we'll have 12K "Mars" sensors! :D

You're probably right.

The big guys have finally given us large sensors in affordable cameras, but there are still many steps to go in order to get even near the RED One itself.

I guess the next big step they will take would be RAW acquisition, which I would say that it's at least two years away (if not more) from cameras in the league of the AF100/FS100.

Then you have HDR, increased resolution, etc.

Of course, things could always change. Canon could hit one out of the ballpark and release a camcorder that records RAW 1080p and has full integration with their lenses and speed up this whole process.

That's what I would do if I were they, since they don't have a high end camcorder market to protect and they would sell lenses like crazy.

Because it's clear that they are looking at RED. Sony's FS100 is pretty much the poor man's EPIC.

Canon could very well make the real "1080p Epic" and win big. Don't see it happening, though.

Back to topic.

Yeah, it seems like cameras like the Af-100 and FS-100 took so long to get where they are, and still so far behind RED. I'll admit I have an AF-100, it was the best thing I could get at the time, and for the cost, it still it. But after using it for a few big projects you really see how much more it could be. The 8bit compression is really letting me down. I prefer the look of my HVX-200s, but they just didn't have the resolution and the 35mm adapter was such a pain to work with. The AF-100 is doing the job as best as it can, but I kinda saw it as my temp camera till Epic-S is released.

canon would have to make a really beautiful 35mm, 2k+ camera with raw acquisition and at least some 15-20megapixel stills for less than 3 thousand for me to even think about it as a short term option. they're not going to do anything close to that.

Good to know. So if Epic-S is ~$12.5k for 5k, FF35 Epic-S would be about 2x the pixels so 2x the electronics so about $24k. Apply though the Jim Jannard Fudge Factor of $0.9 per pixel and you're at about $21k. :) Doable. Although I would prefer a max FPS of 50/25hdrx @ 6k if it meant a $17.5k price tag for the FF35. I have to agree with all those who say this thread was named incorrectly. :D

All of which is wild baseless speculation on a camera which may or may not even still be in the product line-up.

Out of curiosity you can do 6:1 at 60fps on the Epic-S. What about at 24fps? Can you do 2.5:1 or is it not a straight up exchange between framerate and compression rate?
