  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-S (old Scarlet S35) update...

Im a bit lost and dont know if this is common knowledge or not. But is this epic-s still 2/3" or is it the same sensor as the epic but just different computer power or something?

It’s the same sensor as the Epic-X just different boards and overall throughput.

And just to be clear, there still is a 2/3" model (or two) - under the Scarlet name.

Yeah, that fixed lens will be nice for doc work and what have you...but the 2/3 scarlet or epic s will be perfect for me..until im bringing in enough to justify 50 epics, or red dragons...but i wont buy one until i can afford 50...maybe 52...just to one up that Cameron fellow :P

It should be illegal to dig up old threads. I see epic s update and my heart skips a beat only to find out that the thread is 6 months old.

Maybe not, but it does get confusing then you have to go through an old thread to look for updates. If updated information could be out in the first page then a link to the updated first page as the last post when updated would be all that is needed to be read. If recon threads were done this way, maybe kept up to date by a moderator searching for Jim's posts, it would be great.

If you ever have any questions regarding anything RED related when it comes to specs, current release date projections, etc revolving around any camera, I'd be more than happy to get the facts to you...

How nice, Joseph! :)
How's the project EPIC-S release looking these days?

As in the original post stated, they last saw the EPIC-X to be shipping in large quantities in April, with the EPIC-S following a month later in its first run.

Right now, a lot of stuff is up in the air due to the unfortunate events in Japan that everyone is aware of. When the EPIC-X can begin shipping in large quantities, we can look at the EPIC-S most likely to be out about a month later.

(Anything can change, expect it. I'm not an employee of RED and neither do I have further insight than what I have read here on the forum)

I am a member of the core team of Spencer Tunick's Naked Sea installation in Israel.
The shoot will be in September. ( He still shoots with a medium format camera on film. )

It would be so great to make the documentary with Epic-S, -M or -X.
Is there a chance to have an Epic-S by September?

Is it possible to have an Epic-M or -X by September?
(I would try and get funding if yes)

Any chance of an update on whether the Epic-s actually did begin production in may? And if
So maybe a rough idea of timeframe for release, (given that today is June :).
That's all. Thnx for reading.

I am by no means authority for RED, but last I heard, Epic-S would come after Epic-X orders are filled and met. Considering Epic-X is not shipping yet, I would say they probably don't have much news on Epic-S yet.

Only Epic M is in production, S will come after X

Here is my prediction- in writing:
No sight of Epic -S before NAB next year. No production units shipping until before Christmas next year. Price $15K+
Red has a lot of Epics(X) to ship and they haven't even started yet.
and lets not forget Scarlet......

Though there are no facts which point to the EPIC-S coming out around time for NAB'12. But even if it does, I still don't foresee anyone else coming out with something better for that price point. Not even close. Look at the RED One. 3 years and nobody has done anything to compete for its pricepoint and quality.

Something to think about: RED is only "late" by their own standards. Not ours.

Yeah, but I thought they were pretty much the same as Xs with a few (internal modular?) bits removed... And since RED is hoping to fulfill all X pre-order within 2-3 months of the assembly line being up and running, I was under the impression that it would only take another couple of months to switch up to the Epic-S produciton line...

...I'm starting to think I'm way off base (or way too optimistic) with that assessment... I mean, 4-6months from now still puts us into Holiday 2011 territory.
