  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic-S information base?

I was told by a Red official at NAB that it is "very likely" the Epic-S will have 120fps at 2K, which has me excited

Nice! I'm really curious what the key differences are going to be between the X and the S. I mean...what features are worth the additional $45k exactly? I'd be happy with the S being only a "measly" 4k!

Ooooooh, that'd be nice. I remember back when it was Scarlet that the highest it could go was 72 fps at 2K, but it does make sense since it has the larger chassis.

There was one thing I was wondering though. Will there be an upgrade path for Epic S with the Dragon sensor? I mean it is in the Epic line so it wouldn't make much sense to just leave it at Epic M and X. It'd make more sense too because I know me personally, if I ever do get an Epic S and there is no upgrade program than I'll probably just stick with my MX sensor as opposed to buying a new $12,000 brain. If I can spend a few grand to get it upgraded then that would make more sense for me personally.

Only the machined Epic-M is that expensive, the normal Epic-X is only about twice as much as the S.

I believe the M and the X are pretty much one and the same. The M is just the temporary custom made version that you can get now and in beta with some features still non-functioning. Correct me if I'm wrong. Isn't the M actually more expensive at this point then the production X model will be?

I dont understand people spending money on other cameras at this point.. What would you do with an AF 100 once you have an Epic S. We are on the verge of something big. I dont want to buy a camera that is barely good for a wedding when I can get a brain that is being used on blockbusters I dream about in the cinema.

I say, work with any HD cam you got.. Save for the Epic S and get good glass for your 35mm adaptor or canon or whatever.. You can use the glass at the moment and pave your way for the EPIC.

So be patient friend and save wisely, spend wisely.. It will be a sweet spot you will use for many years..

Yes that's exactly right, maybe my wording wasn't good. M is $58k, X is $20something (28? I think), and S is supposedly in the ~$12k range.

I don't understand waiting while you can be working and making money. Sorry, but 35mm adapters and DSLRs aren't cutting it for me. My adapter combo was bulky and cumbersome and I hate the DSLR craze. I have what I consider the next best thing at the moment and I'm putting it to use. When the Epic-S comes out I can easily sell my AF-100, it will have paid for itself multiple times over by then and I'll have all my lenses and accessories in order for when I get my Epic-S, still probably about a year away.

I'm going to take a guess and say the focus is on getting Epic-X running and out the door ASAP. The once those are being knocked out they will shift gears and ready Scarlet Fixed, Interchangeable, and Epic-S ready for production, with Scarlet taking some priority. I can definitely see Epic-S being last out of the gate. We've seen working Epic-Ms and Scarlet Fixed(s). Epic-S and Scarlet Interchangeable have so far been a no show.

Oooooh. Gotcha. Thanks for not making me go through millions of posts to find that. :)

I mean its whatever. Epic-S will be the best camera on the market for that price no matter what. Shoot at this point I could go for a non-MX Red and I'd be happy.

And the reason why Epic-M is so expensive is because its a package deal. You're getting A LOT of accessories to make it a full running system.

Well don't forget, Epic-S will basically just be an Epic-X with a few less boards and gizmos, so it really shouldn't be that long to get them out once Epic-X is out. I don't know if I'm being too hopeful but they may even come out at the same time.

From everything that's been said so far, I think you are being too hopeful :nonod:

+1

A separate section within the Reduser forums for Epic-S would be great.
Granted, their isn't a ton of information available at this time since the focus is on Epic-X and then the Scarlet 8x, but this camera will be following in Epic-X's footsteps. (soon hopefully...)

Reduser is an invaluable resource for all of us interested in every aspect of RED, and to have information concerning the Epic-S collected and more easily displayed would be very helpful.

Well, thread moved off the first page. Maybe this can be stickied so we have at least a single thread for the Epic-S. I can keep the first post updated as news rolls in.

...I guess I'm one of those people that like updates even if the update is that there's nothing new to update...:skep:..

Last Epic S update was on Jan.01..and we pretty much now know that the camera will have half the data rate of epic-X at about half the price...
and production seems to start a couple of months after epic-X production gets going...how much more info. you need?...sums it all up for now:

I know many of you are waiting to hear what is happening on the EPIC-S front. While I still don't have final details from the engineers, here is what we know now.

1. We have moved from the less robust Scarlet S35 chassis to the EPIC S35 chassis (like going from the economy car frame to the truck frame). Pro, not prosumer.

2. We are trying to maximize the performance specs given the cost cutting from the hardware, including board reductions. This is no small task but is a primary focus within engineering.

3. Frame rates and data rates in combination with project sizes will be the primary compromises in comparison with the big brothers (EPIC-X and EPIC-M). You can anticipate about 1/2 the overall data throughput. As soon as the engineers finalize the list... I will post it.

4. HDRx will be included, but with limited frame rate options as is anticipated in #3 above.

5. Price has risen due to the chassis and HDRx change/additions. Expect somewhere in the neighborhood of $12K. Package prices will be posted as soon as we are sure what they will be. We will not post another "interim" price structure in the meantime. Next price posting will be final.

6. EPIC-S will use the same production line as its big brothers (which we are setting up now in California) so there will be no additional delays to produce this model. However, the EPIC-M and EPIC-X models will be released 1st as has previously been noted.

7. EPIC-Ms are currently being produced in low quantities and will step up just a bit this month (January). Production EPIC-X is scheduled to begin small production end of February with a fairly significant ramp up in March. Major volume begins in April. Many of you will have your EPIC-X by NAB. EPIC-S should begin production in May... depending on EPIC-X orders.

We are now pretty comfortable with these schedules, but you know how things are. Read my tagline. I will say that our team has finally turned the corner at hitting their marks.

Given the competitive landscape, we think that the EPIC-S will have no price/performance competition. Think 5K, REDCODE RAW, HDRx, record to SSD, modular system, size of a Hasselblad with many mature professional workflow options.

Well, from what I can tell it's looking to be a step ahead of the original Red One, so starting with that as a base, anything more is golden at the price point.
