I did some searching on the forums, but couldn't find the answers I was looking for. Sorry if they were right under my nose. :P

I currently shoot on a 5D mkII and will be getting an EPIC-S as soon as they're available. I want to get some rails for my 5D, but I'd like them to work with the EPIC-S and I see two options...

19mm rails, probably from the Red store. I'm assuming accessories that say EPIC will work with the EPIC-S and that the Scarlet notation is for Scarlet 2/3" fixed. So the Mounting Plate and Quick Release system is what I will need in the long run. But does anyone know if there's a way to mod the Mounting Plate to use on a 5D? Maybe take a couple of those screws out? Or, is there another 19mm quick release system to get me by with my 5D until the EPIC-S is out?

15mm rails. How much does the EPIC-S weight? Anyone have physical dementions? Would a 15mm rail system be too small? And would there be a 15mm quick release system that could work with EPIC-S?

Thanks for the help!

Strange enough, I thought of that the other day as well. When looking at the cool baseplate, I want it. A Machined piece of aluminum at the right height could be used to the 5D up to the same lens height as the Epic. Some enterprising person should make one. I'd buy one. EPIC-X dimensions are published somewhere. Should be same as Epic-S.

anybody know what the exact lens height of the 5D is?, and maybe I'll make some of these.

Great idea

Great idea

I'm right there with you guys. While Epic-X will be pretty pricey, the Epic-S seems like the perfect camera as my first official RED camera I will own. With a canon and nikon mount added, all my glass will still work for me.

I was looking at rails and matte box setups recently as well. I think machining a part so you can rock your 5d or 7d on your epic ready rails is a great idea. If the red gear won't work for you, I've been looking at Element Technica's gear. See what you think of these:

Looks suspiciously similar to the RED base plate:

(The ET bridge plate is also offered as just as 15mm or a 19mm setup for 900, then if you need to get the other rod clamps in the future, they are 300 bucks.)
Differences?
-The RED "Quick Release Platform pack" comes with an Arri-style dovetail which is nice. The RED also looks like to comes with 19mm &15mm rod clamps in the pictures but it says in the description only 19mm
-The ET "Bridge Plate" should work with your 5d / 7d right away. You could get a Zacuto Gurilla plate if it sat to low and you needed to raise it up a bit. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/682744-REG/Zacuto_Z_GRB_Gorilla_Plate.html

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna buy this over the RED Gunner too:

The RED shoulder mount looks amazing... just out of my price range and I think the Mantis will get me by for a few years.

Let me know what you think about all my nonsence :P

Thanks for the feedback.

@Michael
Looks like 1 5/8" from the base of the 5D to the center of the lens without a battery grip, and 3.5" with. Are there Epic-S dimensions posted somewhere? Also, seems I saw an accessory price list no too terribly long ago, but I've had no luck whatsoever searching the forums for it. Anyone have a link to that?

@Ryan
If I'm going to spend that much, I'll probably just go a bit more and get the stuff I'm looking at in the red store. Looking a bit harder I'm sure I can fabricate something to get a 5D attached to their rail system.

I'd call Kurt at Viewfactor. They will probably make an Epic "cage" with rails support.

The upper two pictures show the camera using a spacer which lets it work with ET's Hybrid sliding base plate. The lower two pictures show the camera using an adapter to work with RED's DSMC Quick Release sliding baseplate.

All of the pictured parts are planned to ship by the end of this week.

The first two pictures work with the ET Hybrid baseplate:

The second two pictures work with RED's DSMC QR baseplate:

Both baseplates work with traditional Arri dovetails.

Unless I misunderstood?

So Brook. That bottom plate with the lightweight rod support meant to fit on the RED base plate. Can that be modified to property fit a 5D? That's the real question of this thread. 5D now, Epic whenever the heck it ships.

It'd be very easy to adapt. I have the math for the Epic and 5D... if there was enough demand it'd be very simple to machine an adapter plate.

What is the hight difference exactly? Would the Zacuto Gorilla plate work?

Also, does anyone know if this RED QR plate is shipping yet?
