Could be anywhere in the world today.
The EPIC Camera still blows me away everyday.

This is the softest lens I own at 50mm f1.2 Ziess shot at 1.2.
and it still looks great...

On a 35mm shoot, I would never use it.

The EPIC tends to make soft older lenses look FANTASTIC.
Im currently testing older lenses every lens i can get my hands on and Wholly crap do they look pleasing. Forgiving and overall just beautiful.
I dont know how to explain it you just have to try it for your self one day.

As i see your getting to here.
very helpful
thanks

Yeah your right.. I'm really getting into them of late. I never ever used to use them at all, hated them in-fact..
I've always been a lens snob. If it wasn't sharp, it never made it on a Toia shoot.

But now my MKIIIs come out for every single EPIC job. The only thing I don't like about digital images is sometimes the sharpness steals the show. (not that that is a bad thing) but lucky for us, we can soften shots a half a pixel with a single mouse click.

The Arri Master primes (my old favourites) are now not getting a look in much unless I want to impress someone with the name... Not saying they are bad lenese, complete opposite, they are a far superior lenses over all (except for there size) ... but the creaminess of this old glass is just so beautiful when mixed with the huge resolution of the EPIC.
I shouldn't say to much. The price of them keeps going up and I want another set..!

it's a pretty common combination. you always need something softer to take off the edge. sharp sensor/soft lens, sharp lens/soft sensor. but having a sharp sensor makes tons more sense since lenses are interchangeable :)

softer lens with such high rez is the perfect marriage in taking that edge off in "unwanted" detail, and still retaining all the stuff you'd want.

Seems RED nailed the OLPF on Epic. Those close crops show no signs of aliasing, very smooth organic texture. That to me is amazing. Your typical APSC 14mp still camera image would already be falling apart due to visible aliasing at that kind of crop.

EPIC just need a new module that could consists a rotary shutter, bunch of build in ND filters and all that is as a front new module with an universal interchangeable mount.

Ans of course a brand new sensor RED Dragon with a native 14 stops of DR.

Its own 1080p (PROres + AVID) a module for dailies on back.

Also a new competitive pricing.

That's all.

With that ready to win any movie acquisition race.

I can;t agree with you more. MAster Primes are beautiful lenses but the creaminess a "softer" "older" lens gives to the Epic is unmatched in my opinion.

shhhhh don't tell the SuperSpeed Gods.... :)

Yes.. I'm thinking about pulling this thread... HA!

Mark you need to demo the Leica PL's, the hyper sharpness of master primes, and still got that nice cream with it. You'd be such a happy camper. and it's half the size of a master prime!

I have :) and was happy :) But this is just a conversation about how the EPIC with shit glass looks sweet. Great glass looks great too... but to sharp for me.
But If Im shooting alot of effects work with a lot of keying going on. The master primes go straight back on :)

Sanjin, you are sounding kinda like a "glass is half empty" guy. More competitive pricing, are you serious?

The main surprise for many people and also for Jim ("We are in a war" tread, etc,..!!!) was the latest Sony announcement about F65 pricing at IBC.

That exactly I was in mind when I wrote those words above...

I dunno about that price cut thing.

$60,000 With, Media, Eyepiece, monitor, and case, and batteries, and made in the USA - versus some half-plastic POS? Yeah, just what we need - to flood the market! I like your opinion on Leica lenses, but I think some of your other ideas need deeper thought.

Why does the world leader in Digital Cinematography need to Slash Prices to keep up with a huge fake 8K camera that doesn't even have onboard recoding capability?

I'm sure Arri (who probably think they have that title) aren't saying "let's slash prices" they are saying "let's charge for firmware updates that should be free!" - they cribbed that rotten idea from Sony.

Great demo on resolution Mark. And we shouldn't forget the other benefits - very low aliasing (don't believe anyone who says "none" when it comes to aliasing), high MTF and lack of digitalness.

Dan, you're right. It's not 8k it's "fake-K".

Mark, great examples as always and I couldn't agree more about old lenses on the Epic, and even the Red One MX, Alexa, Sony F3, AF-100, etc. I keep thinking I'm crazy because I like it so much more than newer glass (exception: Cooke Panchros). I'm always biting my tongue too. I want to buy as much as I can. My collection has only just begun and prices aren't slowing down. Thanks for sharing your tests. Peace.
