  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC RESOLTUION

This thread is just GREAT....seeing all you guys "catching on" to the "old or anciant glass meets new sensor sweetness" i have been doing this since...http://fatalflawmovie.com/ days......:) how many years has that been? wow. :)

shot that entire film on "shit" glass....old 70s nikons for $50 off ebay, could not be happier with the sugar sweet results.

Now I use my RPP for GREENSCREEN work becuas they falloff is so little and for commercial work...but I'd take a bet I'll be right back on ebay soon for some more "old crappy" glass for our next feature. :0

the oldies can bring so much to cut off the sharpness and bring some character: a perfect marriage!

They're not getting older, ...

They're not getting older, ...

Bought Mk2 SuperSpeeds in Nov. 2007 for my RedOne with the intent of avoiding the "harsh digital look". Turns out the RedOne doesn't have a harsh digital look, and, IMHO, neither does the Epic - even with all its resolution. Props to Graeme for holding his ground on the "no aliasing" approach so we get real resolution rather than the pumped up false sharpness of the pre F35 CineAltas.

Choosing glass with the right "character" for a particular project can be a terrific creative choice. Rock on. Beyond that, I maintain that one of the reasons the older glass is so compelling is that the focus falloff is slower so slightly buzzed focus doesn't kill takes as easily.

+1 for the Leica C primes managing to be sharp and creamy at the same time - freakin' brilliant.

Cheers - #!9

Nikon rarely made "shit" glass, even back then. My favourite lens to use is the 58mm f/1.2 Noct-Nikkor and I wasn't even born when it was made.

Toia, you're making me want to break out the old Angie 25-250mm grandaddy...haven't slapped it on the EPIC yet...now I'm curious to see this magical transformation of old glass into new again.

The EPIC Camera still blows me away everyday.

This is the softest lens I own at 50mm f1.2 Ziess shot at 1.2.
and it still looks great...

On a 35mm shoot, I would never use it.

Amazing.....

Mark,

You were right about the price for this set of lenses are going up. Last time I bought this set ( 18 - 85 ) were USD 38K. Someone told me that, when first time He bought the lenses, the price were USD 25K.

Not sure which 25-250 you are talking about, but I just put the old f/2 in Arri atandard mount (with PL adapter) version on the Epic... what a great combo :)

I may hold on to my Mark 3 Superspeeds until retirement! ;)
As cameras get smaller, there is something to be said for small highspeed cine lenses that don't weigh 12 lbs. And the slightly softer look is really pretty.
It will be interesting to see where the Leicas land in terms of look, sharpness, etc.
And I think all that worry about vignetting, portholing, etc. with the slightly larger size of the Epic sensor was mostly overblown.
Cheers,
H.

I can;t agree with you more. MAster Primes are beautiful lenses but the creaminess a "softer" "older" lens gives to the Epic is unmatched in my opinion.

shhhhh don't tell the SuperSpeed Gods.... :)

Jason

I agree - I also find the feel of the falloff very sexy, from in-focus regions to out of focus - they have their own seductive character.

Sanjin, I really do try and believe that it's a "lost in translation" thing with you, but some of the stuff you come up with is just total rubbish. How on earth you don't see RED, especially in regards to Epic, as cost effective is just beyond me. Tried to buy an Alexa? an F65? Gee, what do they cost in comparison and quality compared to Epic? And when those manufacturers find a way to improve their cameras they're going to charge you.... all over again.

If you think you can do better for cheaper, go ahead and do it but for God's sake, stop with the crap about how you think Red should be run. Stop repeating the same damn questions all the time when Jim has already given answers. It's getting real old, real fast. At the very least stay away from the forum when you've been drinking.

Sorry for hijacking Mark. Great pics.
