  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Some ideas for cooling and a Cable Connector Request. While it's probably not too late to change tooling for the Epic, this Red One cooling scheme might be able to be implemented in the existing tooling. The cable is essential, I think. (I did add a little bit more material around the hole in the top mount on the Red One, in case it looks weird)

I hate having a cradle sticking out the back, and I've whacked it on many a wall, or tried fitting into a tight space and been denied. I want a compact unit that brings the lense and center of gravity very close to my shoulder blade without any complicated shoulder pad apparatus. I want the battery and drive to mount directly on the camera with little to no profile.

Warm regards,

IBloom

Who said it have to be there all the time? My suggestion is only for handheld solution. Most of the time I have my cradle in the back on the top rods (as a 435 magazine) - What I talked about would be close to the ergonomics of A235 and AATON with magazines for the back. Taking the same solution would balance it extremely well on the top rods as well. I'll try to illustrate somehow - even though my drawing skills is not that great.

Will EPIC have dual system flash ports like SCARLET? Or do you have some other sneaky plan for recording media up your sleeve? The specs just mention Redflash, which hasn't been released yet. The dual flash module doesn't appear on any of the EPIC renders or the brochure, so I'm wondering how that will fit on the package as well. Also the specs mention RGB recording, which no one has brought up...will we have some straight out of the camera options? That would make this very flexible, especially if we can apply looks...

I'm getting pretty addicted to CF media, and probably will be even more so when the 16gb cards are released. I'm wondering what kind of space/weight/positioning will need to be devoted to the recording media and how it will be distributed.

On my drive to set today I was thinking about the audio inputs on the Epic. - there is really no way to please everyone.

How about having a dumb side external sound module, like a modern version of the moviecam speed control . Doc guys could have a version with full sized XLR's, pots and phantom power. If you are working with a mixer there would be a version that uses the plug that goes directly to the breakout snake cable. For MOS just use a light weight rubber port cover. A wireless receiver version could be made, powered from camera - the mind reels at the possibilities.

Maybe a uber-geek version that uses the audio tracks for VFX Meta-Data and GPS...

Red would not even have to make the components. Release the specs for the connector and let sound specialists go wild.

Seems like everybody could be happy that way ?

Likely fail at a high rate
- Be extremely expensive to manufacture & solder
- Be vulnerable to RF and other interference issues
- Need to be significantly larger to allow for slip-disc connection points in a stack.

I dunno, The m-1 motor from Palomar has never let me down, and is not overly expensive, and is made right here in the USA.

We had a contest here in the disney XD camera dept... the winner gets to spend some quality time with the assistant wardrobe girl at lunch.

Which of these would you rather carry around for 14 hours on a music video for an "Up and coming Rap artist" and his posse ?

The camera bottom would ever go (much) lower than video rods. The design would be to the Arri standard by way of a riser block, a removable block that extends from the bottom of the camera to where the studio rods would be. Keeping the rod-to-lens optical height standard doesn't mean the camera has to be top-heavy and square. Low camera placement for rigs and underwater housings would be possible with the block removed

All these would keep the CG low while maintaining front-to-back balance with lenses and accessories mounted. When on sticks, all of the camera's weight would be out and behind the dovetail, so balancing the 12-1 Optimo would work fine.

If the shape of the board stack is the limitation, maybe redesign the boards?. Circuit boards come in more shapes than motors and gears. My friend has one that is shaped like Texas.

That's why someone smarter than You and I would have to make it, Mitch. If Jim and his Team can build a 4K 35mm camera and offer it for $17,500, I'm sure somebody could solve this simple little cable issue.

My only request is that a more efficient cooling system be added to the Epics design or at least allow for a interchangeable top mount for attaching a cooling systems because in 95 degree heat the Red One camera and drive produce alot of heat decreasing consistant dependability.

My humble suggestions as a working Camera Assistant / DIT / DP

- More Heat Sinks.
- More accurate internal temp readout for body and "mag".
- Allow for liquid cooling accessory to increase dependability.
- Stand-by mode to allow camera to cool in 90+ heat on 10 hr plus shoots in Direct Sunlight or Hot Studio's.

Data equals power and power equals heat.....

Thanks for your considerations.....

I wish you guys would clean up this thread and remove all the bickering - or close it or something. :(

As I’ve reviewed the announcement of Epic, RED Team’s posts on this forum, the info on the RED web site, and the info in the NAB PDF, I don’t see anywhere a claim that Epic was being designed to take over the movie industry. I see specs (5k, 100fps, etc.), but no exclusive recommendations for its use. Epic can and will be used in abroad array of genres beyond the movie industry.

"Epic is the feature film flagship of the RED family, built with a total modular model, allowing for years of future proofing."

http://www.red.com/faq/epic-overview/

it might just be marketing sales speak but i would say they chose their words [feature film] carefully.

found this on the red site as well...

"We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone with a bad attitiude"

Has the RED team ever enforced this - you might have a few candidates...

HAHA...does that mean the one that praises the Red team the most gets the first service?

Jim, and company, we, I mean, "I" LOVE YOU!!!
