  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC REMOTE ON/OFF START/ROLL/CUT 30-60foot long.

I can imagine there are potential interference issues with any RF device (like the REDmote) and I would assume RED is extremely careful not to allow anything to affect the core operation of the camera system. Good call.

That said, this issue should not exist. The REDmote should be designed to reliably communicate with the Epic from up to 100' (30 meters) away.

An Epic friendly Origo with a 50' cable will make it into a lot of kits (including mine) for jib/crane work but this is the kind of thing the REDmote should do in its sleep.

I don't mean to be harsh, the REDmote is one more example of how Jim and RED are at war with conventional thinking, it just may be a few revisions away from fulfilling its destiny.

Cheers - #19

We've stated before that REDmote's full range is not enabled yet.
Not sure why harshness has been necessary to communicate with us... we've been here all along to listen.

I didnt read that as harsh Deanan... I think he didnt add a smiley face :))))

But this is the first time Ive heard about the REDMOTE getting a longer range., I'm very very very happy about that. as the REDMOTE is now a major tool on the camera for me, I don't use the touch screen hardly at all, so the REDMOTE is a huge asset.

But in the short term... I'm just wanting a Origo styled cable made up for now. :) just so I can keep working quickly on action crane vehicles.
Because none of us actually know if the REMOTE range will be 1 week away or 1 year. (no disrespect). So this is just a quick fix for alot of us.

Also .. I read in Blairs post a great compliment.
"it just may be a few revisions away from fulfilling its destiny".

I'm a cup half full type of guy.

Have a nice day Deanan. :))))))

Mark, our priority has been our motors/controllers so we can only fit in new projects if they are easy things that I can do in a day or two. Luckily this is one of those easy things. I already have a design completed for an origo that will work with Epic, it should be completed in a couple weeks. I'll post some more info when the boards come in.

COOOOL!!!!!!!

Consider it ordered...

I may be wrong, but I thought I heard Ted say that the iPad app could control the epic/scarlet upto or over 100ft??

100 feet !!!! Now we are talking. Lets hope the REDMOTE performs at those numbers one day soon.
anyway. till then, Kurts cable will do me just fine. :))))

I built one of these for Daufenbach camera in Chicago. If all you're looking for is a remote box to speed or stop the camera, shoot me an email.

Do you need the REDmode to use the iPad app?

...again to be qualified by a Red Team member but I thought it was a secure proprietary wifi technology/connection, built into the camera itself that the iPad 2 app can connect with, therefore no need for remote? Don't bet money on it but that's how I understood it.

When I saw the demo at NAb there was no special WiFi Epic module involved...just the Epic, a WiFi router, and an iPad2 running the Epic app. However, it seemed to be more of a technology demo of Epic capability rather than a committed product on any roadmap.

Sadly, some applications simply can not be done without On/Off remote switch. Side-by-Side stereo setup, for example. We also need a rear SSD module for that.

I shot with a crude side-by-side rig (as in, two Epics bolted down to a steel plate kind of crude) on Friday and had no trouble start/stopping both cameras. Master/slaved together with the GigE cable, and the start/stop button easily accessible on the side of the right eye camera. As for on/off I just turned both bodies on before tightening the bolts. Of course, if you needed to power down the rig but not take it apart then that's not going to help.

Actually Deanan, I was trying to be clear that my intention was NOT to be harsh. It isn't warranted and would be unfair.

I do understand that not every capability of the system is fully enabled yet and I have no doubt the RedTeam, including you, are working very hard. If I implied anything else, or that you and others on the RedTeam are anything but very responsive in direct communications that is simply not the case. I have not chosen to take up bandwidth with anyone at RED on this topic as I feel certain it is being worked on and I have not discovered anything specific and repeatable in my operation of the REDmote that I felt would be of value to pass along.

In any case, just count me as one of the many folks who think the REDmote has tremendous potential and look forward to when it can operate reliably over longer distances.

Hey Curt,

I have your Origo and 30' cable for my RED ONE. I'll sell it if it won't work on my EPIC. But if you made an adapter or mod for the existing unit, that would be cool.

Yeah, you were lucky your cameras weren't mounted on a wing of an aircraft or in an underwater housing :)

In the Appendix F of the manual it says that Master and Slave cameras can be operated by connecting them with a cable (I think it is the GigE cable) and enabling Master/Slave configuration in the menus. It strikes me that one can change settings, Start/Stop recording and POWER DOWN the Slave camera from the Master camera. But, the most important (and somewhat critical) function: POWER UP, is not available.

So...we are almost there...BUT....How could anyone use any of the existing functions if they can't power the camera up in the first place?

Can anyone from RED chime in on the status of the remote Power Up function? We know it is looked at, which is great.

What options do we have? A module? A firmware update? A hack and tap into the electronics? A special cable? Edge connector? Anything?
