Remote record on / off cable for EPIC .. anyone?

Some thing like the RED ONE had with this little cabled run start press button Veiw factor made some time ago.
http://www.viewfactor.net/index.php/products/switches/origo.html

Since the REDMOTE does not transmit further than 8 to 10 feet at the moment, I'm looking for a quick, reliable , safe form of remote on/off switch for the RED EPIC similar to the view factor version, with 30 to 50 foot long cables.

Any ideas anybody? RED?

PS... and if anything exists.. what port to do put it into for the EPIC.

I think Curt going to make it soon, hehe... Await... +3

soooo.. in short.. no easy fix? mmmmmm... yes, I hope Curt makes something shortly.

It's a pain to have to hire a preston unit just to turn a camera on.. a simple button on the end of of the cable is all we need.

Somebody must have made something up..? that is simple and just works.

I'm going to keep BUMPing the post up, I'm sure somebody has found a simple solution.

Thanks guys.

Page 138 of the EPIC manual gives you the wiring configuration.

The cable could be made up easily enough. It would just be a pretty expensive cable because the cables and connectors are expensive. Also, are these standard LEMO or are they like the new EPIC proprietary power LEMO.

Is there a way to amplify the REDMOTE signal or add a repeater in between, presumably it has to be on a specifc frequency that does not interefere with RF transmitters?

With this cable (red saves us the pain of getting/soldering the 00 lemos)
http://www.red.com/store/cables/product/4-pin-00-lemo-to-flying-lead

and the diagram on page 137 (136) of the manual - it would be pretty easy to make an adapter to any contact start stop device (preston cable, or even a simple momentary switch)

EEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeek... scarey...

Im bit of a techno dude, but when it comes to making your own cables that work (and not arc out my cameras computer) ... I'd rather keep it with the PRO's.

Somebody has to be making these things up.. ????

RED team.. any people out there you guys trust to make what I'm after.. names, contacts? Please.

Mark, our priority has been our motors/controllers so we can only fit in new projects if they are easy things that I can do in a day or two. Luckily this is one of those easy things. I already have a design completed for an origo that will work with Epic, it should be completed in a couple weeks. I'll post some more info when the boards come in.

You might also try contacting monstercine to see if they have an Epic compatible cable in the works. Their controller for the Red One has Lemo on the Red end, but XLR connector on the control box end. I would assume that one could extend the length to whatever they wanted by using a standard mic cable. The control box is a bit bulky compared to the Origo. I have a 30' Origo and love it. http://www.monstercine.com/

Start/Stop device should be do-able. But On/Off seems impossible unless RED makes some changes. Sadly, some applications simply can not be done without On/Off remote switch. Side-by-Side stereo setup, for example. We also need a rear SSD module for that.

I can imagine there are potential interference issues with any RF device (like the REDmote) and I would assume RED is extremely careful not to allow anything to affect the core operation of the camera system. Good call.

That said, this issue should not exist. The REDmote should be designed to reliably communicate with the Epic from up to 100' (30 meters) away.

An Epic friendly Origo with a 50' cable will make it into a lot of kits (including mine) for jib/crane work but this is the kind of thing the REDmote should do in its sleep.

I don't mean to be harsh, the REDmote is one more example of how Jim and RED are at war with conventional thinking, it just may be a few revisions away from fulfilling its destiny.

Cheers - #19
