  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC... ready.

Can anyone give a quick executive summary of this thread? If I have Stage 2 #352, when might I expect the Epic?

After the announced Major Movies to be shot on the Tattoo + 13 will be done with and all possible Bugs reported, my take reading Jim's lines ;)

Tattoo (+13) will not be for sale. These will go on selected projects while production EPICs are being staged to be built. We need to watch over the Tattoo +13's carefully.

OffHollywood, and everyone else, will get the same Stage 2 production EPICs.

Jim

Total guess here, but I'd say 2-3 months. It sounds like they will "start" building production units in about a month. Maybe first shipments in 6 weeks. Small number of units at first, ramping up later. You are probably about 200-250 in line. Again all guessing here. Anyone have a better idea?

red drive ?

red drive ?

Don't worry though, there is an SSD adapter that turns CF cards into an SSD mag so you can still use all your CF cards in either the side SSD or read SSD modules.

Some really great news !! Red drive working on Epic already ?? More affordable than SSD for extended recording capacity...

Well if I can get that baby in January/February I would be super stoked.

What was to overcome? Even the first Epic prototypes did everything the Alexa does now.. The Alexa is basically an 1080p HD-SDI camera head... Prores recording? An Epic with a HD-SDI nano recorder is still 1/3rd the weight and 1/3rd the size...

The supposed latitude advantage? someone confirmed that is from the use of a ultracon filter over the sensor ( which also is a reason the Alexa looks so soft ) and thats before you even turn HDRx™ on.

People can put the Alexa and the Red One in the same sentence, but the Epic is truly in a whole different league.

Love Arri, and the Alexa is a great camera, but i promise you the Alexa didn't slow us down one bit :) The only difference is they ended up shipping a non-complete beta camera and we didn't.

Now tell us what you REALLY think, Jarred? hehe

There were a couple ways to read what Jim said, but I think he meant Tattoo is ending right now and they are ordering the parts to start production of Stage 2 and up Epics. Contrary to the original plan, RED will keep the 13 Tattoo cameras and put them on major projects. Due to the expense of making the prototypes RED decided not to sell them and will keep them around for continued evaluation.

yes.. its how it will ship if you choose that option. Absolute minimum config would be a Brain, Side SSD and a Touchscreen monitor. (assuming you are powering from a battery belt or AC pack) Add a side handle for battery power and additional control, and/or a Redmote for icing on the cake and wireless control.

Well done guys! Great to have the SSD as a standard side module. It is looking like we can go light weight and compact for those shooting set-ups that need it. Ground breaking high quality in ground breaking small size and practicality!

If someone from the Red team could chime in.

Although a little large, will the offset of the Red/Arri 15mm base plate work with the epic? Or will there be a new accessory to mount for dovetails?, when the epic is configured for studio.

What a great age we live in. Really excited to put it in my hands and take it for a test. Good thing red was always my favorite color anyway :)

Unlikely. They need to first let major movies completely go through production, then incorporate that crucial feedback into the Epic. Get it shit brick solid in every conceivable configuration, use and situation, plus iron out inevitable production troubles. I'm guessing March for first batch, with my hopes that it's before NAB.

Congratulations to the Red team. It must be sooo nice to have the camera in front of you, really, really in front of you...

Shawn, I've seen a couple people post similar estimates but I don't see where Jim said they are waiting for more beta testing. It sounded to me like they have already got the crucial feedback they needed, the firmware is solid, and they will ship as soon as the parts come in and are assembled. Quite possible I missed something though...

Mazleltov!

Mazleltov!

Jim and Crew, CONGRATS! Was happy to see Epic Prototypes at RED USER DAY 2010, looking forward to Scarlet in 2011!

The side and rear SSD recording modules are available first.. in fact the Side SSD is the standard side module, we will not be making a side CF module for Epic. Don't worry though, there is an SSD adapter that turns CF cards into an SSD mag so you can still use all your CF cards in either the side SSD or read SSD modules.

Fantastic Guys, Congrats on getting Epic on the way to production!

I quoted Jarred here to put some emphasis on the above statement, looks like SSD module is standard on Epic but still compatible with CF via an adapter! Hopefully Scarlet will follow this trend!

uhm, the fact that Epic hasnt been used on any feature films (for an entire film, as A camera) and that the first post in this thread is Jim saying that it's now ready to be used on productions???

He said ready for "production" and "ordering all the parts and pieces (over 18,000) to begin production"

This is why I was asking for clarification as to whether Tattoo is considered complete. It's not entirely clear to me from the posts above.

Yeah but to me it is as clear as day ;)

When Jim says "We need to watch over the Tattoo +13's carefully."
this to me means very clearly that only after they did had the chance to see the cameras at work they will then proceed with production,
no matter if the cameras have been STAGED for production, STAGED and IN PRODUCTION are two different things ;)

Tattoo +13's are complete. All the board mods and changes made to finish it now need to get ordered. Can't build production boards until development/changes are done. They are now.
