  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC... ready.

how long will the tattoo program run

The side and rear SSD recording modules are available first.. in fact the Side SSD is the standard side module, we will not be making a side CF module for Epic. Don't worry though, there is an SSD adapter that turns CF cards into an SSD mag so you can still use all your CF cards in either the side SSD or read SSD modules.

Hey Jarred, will You be able to put two (or more) of the CF cards in one SSD shell for 32GB capacity and higher frame-rate / RC rates? Essentially a "CF-RAID". That would be really cool...

and by the way, dose the look of an epic differ from a r1mx

Tattoo +13's are complete. All the board mods and changes made to finish it now need to get ordered. Can't build production boards until development/changes are done. They are now.

Jim

Jim, I think the confusion is in regards to the original "Tattoo" 3 month beta test that was announced. Things have definitely changed since that announcement so I think we are wondering if the beta test period is just beginning, in process, or completely finished.

What is important I guess, is will Epic be delayed for any further testing or will it ship as soon as the parts come in and it is assembled?

Unlikely. They need to first let major movies completely go through production, then incorporate that crucial feedback into the Epic. Get it shit brick solid in every conceivable configuration, use and situation, plus iron out inevitable production troubles. I'm guessing March for first batch, with my hopes that it's before NAB.

Minimum 6 months from now or today November 6/7 2010 that would be May/June 2011 as its best time or ... ????!!!!

Everyone be patient and let Red have the breathing room they need as they enter this crucial next step of the development cycle. Real-world feature production beta testing and feedback is super, super critical to building the type of uber-robust camera we all want. The importance of this thread is the Epic is ready to head to battle :-). Very exciting times indeed!!!

Beyond a Thankyou

Beyond a Thankyou

I expect that this will be a highly read post. Given that... I'd like to go on record that there are many faithful and dedicated people at RED that have worked tirelessly on this project and everyone needs to know how much effort they have put forth. If we ever earn respect in the industry for this work, many are responsible. There are many whose names people will never be heard. Many who have joined the fight because the challenge was worthy. My hat is off to the RED Army... every one.

Jim

Could never put into words the appreciation to the Red Army and General Jim for the incredible work and achievements that you have made! Your passion is contagious, looking forward to seeing all the amazing historical projects that will come to fruition because of your dedication. So looking forward to it!

Uhh Shawn? No one's freaking out dude.. They are just happy. And for the most part there is no "next step of the development cycle" Jim made it as clear as day...

All mods and boards made it to finish. They are done.. Parts will now be ordered.

That's it dude.. I'm sure they will continue to tweak the firmware, but we all know... RED NEVER stops tweaking the firmware.. That will not hold up release.

One more time: Tattoos are not going to productions for feedback in order to finish development.. Development (Hardware) is complete.. Tattoo cameras will now move onto productions (they are finished cameras) and orders for production units will now take place.

Have a nice day!

Jay

Congratulations guys! Truly an amazing achievement. I highly await sending my RED ONE back in for an Epic.

I'd like to go on record as saying, "Thank you." And that you have earned the respect of a great many.

How long will it take to get the assembly line rolling? No one really knows, but parts are ordered and like any well-run program Red has been preparing for this stage in advance. From Adam Wilt's report (published at ProVideoCoalition.com) on his September visit to RED studios:

He [Jannard] leads me down the last half of the last row of benches. “This is our prototype assembly line,” he says. “We’re building EPICs by hand, so we can see what works and what doesn’t work in the assembly and test process. That way we can work out our manufacturing bugs before we set up our real production line.”

Go RED Army!

That means we will ... begin ordering all the parts and pieces (over 18,000) to begin production. It will take a bit of time to set up the line and gather all we need, but the end is in sight.

Just to be clear here: That's 18,000 parts per camera?? That is an absolutely mind-numbing number. Im amazed, and know not what to say.

But does this include every individual resistor, capacitor, etc? 'Cause if so, I'm sure a lot of other things are pretty high up there too.

There is a next step of the development cycle that they are about to enter. (I am an engineer by profession and degree.) They are over 'the hump' and are about to enter 'the tail' in the cycle. In more proper vernacular, now that alpha testing is complete, feature production beta testing can now begin. Then final verification of whatever changes as a result of beta feedback. This is all very much parts of the "development process". Just re-read Jim's posts carefully and you can see that now the prototypes are about to get sent out on real productions, meanwhile the process of building production units begins. THE PROCESS, that in and of itself has its own dev cycle. I'm not the least bit worried, sounds like Jim and Jarred have had an AWESOME week and I'm good to sit tight. They have hit a very important milestone!
